Rosie O’Donnell is responding to Kathy Griffin‘s comments that she was “really hurt” the fellow comedian didn’t invite her on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week.
O’Donnell, who is currently serving as guest host in Kimmel’s stead, commented on Griffin’s Instagram post about the situation to let her friend know that it wasn’t a personal slight.
“Kathy – shoulda called me honey – I didn’t choose the guests…,” O’Donnell replied.

Earlier this week, Griffin published a YouTube video titled “If Rosie Would’ve Called, I Would’ve Jumped,” in which she explained that she was upset O’Donnell didn’t invite her on Liveafter previously expressing interest.
“My feelings were really hurt that I was not invited to go on Rosie’s week of the Jimmy Kimmel show,” Griffin confessed. “I love Jimmy so much. He’s one of my oldest friends… I love Rosie, she’s one of my oldest friends.”
In the video, Griffin explained that she’d informed O’Donnell that she’d “love to be a guest” during her run while the pair were on a recent flight together. She also noted that it would’ve been significant to have two women who have been embroiled in controversy surrounding Donald Trump on the show.
“She didn’t say anything about me being a guest. And I thought, ‘Well, she’s the guest host, she may have no say in it,'” Griffin said. “And, to this day, I don’t know if she has any say in it. As far as I know, she could or could not. I really… How would I know, right?”

That didn’t stop her from getting excited at the prospect of appearing on the program. “As it was coming closer that she was gonna do the show, I started getting more correspondence and just friends calling me that know me and know the two of us to be friends, et cetera, and saying like, ‘Which night are you doing?'” Griffin recalled. “And ‘are you gonna be a surprise?’ And ‘are you guys doing a sketch or just a sit-down interview?'”
She continued, “And you know, I admit I was kind of getting excited. Like, yeah, this could be a really cool moment. Then that moment passed. And kept passing.”
Still, Griffin was supportive of O’Donnell’s hosting this week, even if it felt bittersweet. “She’s doing a great job and will continue to. If I have one call to action, it’s that you guys watch the show and support her,” she said. “I just think it’s a tricky situation because I’m having all kinds of the feels. I will watch every night and cheer her on, of course.”
O’Donnell’s guests on the show this week have included Hannah Waddingham, Ana Gasteyer, Jean Smart, and Richard Gadd. She is slated to speak with Charlie Day, Janelle James, Shawn Hatosy, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, and more throughout the week.
