It has been 50 years since Sylvester Stallone‘s Rocky went the distance, and the Philadelphia underdog is getting ready to return to the big screen in style. A poster for the Rocky 50th anniversary theatrical re-release has arrived, along with a look at an awesome collectible that fans will be able to pick up during the limited engagement.
The official Rocky social media account unveiled the poster, which features the iconic silhouette of Stallone’s Rocky Balboa standing triumphantly atop the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The original Rocky will return to theatres in a new 4K restoration from November 7 through November 11.
The five-day theatrical event will also include an exclusive featurette tied to I Play Rocky, the upcoming movie about Stallone’s struggle to get the original Rocky made and convince the studio that he had to play the title character himself. The featurette includes behind-the-scenes footage, clips, interviews, and a cast greeting from I Play Rocky. Tickets are already on sale through Fathom Entertainment.

And then there are the collectibles. Select participating theatres will have a limited-edition Rocky 50th Anniversary Staircase Popcorn Bucket, which recreates the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. There will also be a 130-ounce round popcorn tin and a 44-ounce beverage cup. Availability and purchase limits will vary by theatre, so you’ll want to check with your local cinema if you have your eye on one of these.
Aa Rocky popcorn bucket shaped like the steps where Rocky celebrates his training is exactly the sort of theatrical collectible that feels appropriate for this particular movie. After all, if there is one movie franchise that has earned the right to turn its most recognizable location into a giant popcorn container, it’s probably Rocky.
The anniversary rerelease arrives just before I Play Rocky, the Peter Farrelly-directed movie dramatizing the making of the 1976 classic. Anthony Ippolito stars as a young Stallone, with AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack, Stephan James as Carl Weathers, and Matt Dillon, Toby Kebbell, P.J. Byrne, Jay Duplass, Tracy Letts, and others also appearing. Farrelly directs from a screenplay by Peter Gamble.
I Play Rocky is currently scheduled to open in select theatres on November 6, with the film expanding nationwide later in November.
The timing makes the Rocky 50th anniversary rerelease fitting. The original film follows Rocky Balboa, a struggling Philadelphia boxer who gets the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fight heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Written by and starring Stallone, Rocky became a cultural phenomenon, earning 10 Academy Award nominations and winning Best Picture, Best Director for John G. Avildsen, and Best Film Editing.
