South Dakota has reached a $15-million settlement with a popular gaming platform that officials say will protect children in the state from online exploitation
Attorney General Marty Jackley on Monday announced the settlement with Roblox that includes age verification and funding for after-school programs
South Dakota is one of five states that have reached legal settlements with Roblox

The agreement includes funding for South Dakota’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force plus money to create a public service campaign promoting online child safety
Attorney General Marty Jackley says as many as 85-million subscribers are on Roblox every month
“I would guess most parents, whether they realize it or not, their kids have been on this gaming platform,” Jackley said
Jackley says Roblox’s chat rooms have caught the attention of state attorneys general across the country
“We’ve seen in these chats where essentially bad actors are trying to entice young children to do very difficult things,” Jackley said

Jackley says there are no specific cases of South Dakota children being exploited through Roblox. But state officials say the safeguards included in the settlement will protect children from people wanting to do harm
“I think we know that in some ways, the digital world can be more dangerous even than the real world,” South Dakota Lt. Governor Tony Venhuizen said
The agreement with Roblox includes $5 million for the South Dakota Department of Education, with 20% of that money going toward after-school programs
“The after-school program is exactly where this needs to go because that’s the time of the day when kids, who are frequently without parental supervision, are going home and then they have kind of free rein,” South Dakota Secretary of Education Joe Graves said

Jackley says Roblox has also agreed to set up an age verification system as part of the settlement
“It isn’t simply going to be a kid goes on and says I’m 18 and then can move forward. It’s going to be more specific than that. There’s more stages; there’s ID verifications,” Jackley said
Jackley acknowledges that age verification is not a foolproof system. That’s why he says it’s important for parents to pay attention when their children are online
Under the settlement, South Dakota would receive another $5.4 million dollars from Roblox if the company fails to <a href="https://comicvibe.com/sykkuno-and-the-live-pull-of-his-twitch-streams/” title=”Sykkuno and the live pull of his Twitch streams”>live up to any of the provisions in the agreement

The agreement also includes a ‘most favored nation’ clause, which means South Dakota would be entitled to any improved terms, including additional funding, that are later agreed upon between Roblox and any other state
