Ky. (WBKO) -Local students got the chance Saturday to turn their favorite game into a problem-solving tool during a hands-on coding and game design workshop at Western Kentucky University
Roblox and the Congressional App Challenge hosted the event — the first of six stops planned across the country — encouraging students to create apps, games, and other digital projects that address issues in their communities
“The Congressional App Challenge is where Congress has a contest where they put it out to almost all the congressional districts in the U.S. to have students build apps and games and anything digital, really, that solve a problem,” said Adam Seldow, senior director of education policy at Roblox. “And gaming is one of the most fun ways to solve problems, work together, learn how to code, and do all these fun things.”
Seldow said the workshop helps the next generation of game developers build coding skills while learning and creating alongside peers with similar goals
“With the advent of AI and the proliferation of it right now, it’s super important that you have those technical skills from an earlier age,” Seldow said. “And so learning those skills while making a game in a fun environment is a great way to be introduced to those topics and really learn how to build upon them so that you can use them to build great things.”
Seldow said Roblox can serve as a training ground for aspiring game developers, giving students a path to turn their interest in gaming into a career
“Roblox is already in a lot of kids’ lives, and it’s important that they have a place to express themselves,” Seldow said. “It’s important that they have a safe place to join together. It’s important that they have a place to build and create where they can express their ideas and then invite others to see their work.”
Students have until October to submit the game ideas developed at Saturday’s workshop. More information about the Congressional App Challenge is available at congressionalappchallenge.us
