Austin Abrams has revealed why he agreed to star in Resident Evil, his first film in the franchise. The actor said Zach Cregger’s sharp blend of comedy and horror was a major reason he wanted to be part of the film.

Resident Evil, starring Austin Abrams, is scheduled for release on September 18. His first movie in the series is this one. But after Weapons, this is Zach Cregger’s second movie. The actor acknowledged that Cregger’s brilliant blend of comedy and terror was the reason he agreed to the movie.
Talking about his character, Austin Abrams said, “Zach’s humor makes me laugh because it’s so sharp. I really love his work because in one moment Zach can freak you out, and a second later, make you laugh. It’s his kind of flavoring.”
Abrams also found much to explore with what he called “Bryan’s emotional journey. Bryan still has some qualities of being immature and a little selfish, but he’s trying to be a man; he’s on the cusp of coming into his own. Ultimately, he wants to do the right thing and complete his task.”
Producer Miri Yoon described Abrams as nothing less than ‘a gift,’ adding, “Austin’s portrayal is very natural and honest. He’s so wonderful at playing the everyman, who stands in for all of us who have never handled a weapon and have no fighting or survival skills. Bryan is just a guy trying to get through a really bad day full of mayhem and gore.”
Producer Roy Lee added, “Austin brings a real sense of resilience to the role. He has the physical presence to handle the intense action, but he also gives the character heart and hope, so that you’re constantly rooting for him to survive the night.”
From Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in collaboration with TriStar Pictures, the upcoming movie is distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment India and is available in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and English.
Resident Evil is slated to hit the theatres on September 18, 2026.
