The Texas Rangers head to the Windy City to take on the Chicago White Sox in a series that will be meaningful for both teams.
The Rangers (65-66) have tied the Houston Astros (65-55) in the American League West race, though that won’t be enough to win the division. Because Houston won the season series with Texas, the Astros have the tiebreaker. So, if the postseason started on Monday Houston would go to the playoffs.
If the playoff started on Monday, the Rangers would make the playoffs as the final AL wild card team. Texas is tied with the Cleveland Guardians (65-66). The Rangers would get the final berth because they have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland (4-2 in the season series).
The White Sox (68-62) have a 3.5-game lead on the field in the AL Central going into the series. The Guardians are nipping at the White Sox while the Minnesota Twins — who are also in the AL wild card race — are 5.5 games back. Chicago has as much at stake this week as Texas.
It’s a tough road trip for the Rangers. After three games in Chicago and a day off, the Rangers head to Milwaukee for a three-games set against the NL Central-leading Brewers.
Here is a preview of the series, with the pitching probables and the injured list.
