Several major PC hardware developments could affect sim racers planning an upgrade over the next few years. Memory manufacturer SK hynix expects tight memory supply to continue through 2030, AMD has accidentally revealed important details about its next Zen 6 desktop platform, and an unfinished version of NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology is already being tested by modders.
There is also an important development for console racers. Xbox Insiders can begin testing a new system today that links supported physical games to digital entitlements while allowing the original disc to continue working. Taken together, these developments could affect how much future sim racing PCs cost, which upgrade paths remain available and how upcoming rendering technologies perform.
RAM Prices Could Remain a Problem for Years
SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung expects the current memory semiconductor shortage to continue through the end of 2030. The company sees continued AI demand as a major factor and is expanding production capacity, including a new Indiana facility expected to begin mass production of next-generation HBM4E products in 2029.
That does not mean consumer DDR5 prices are guaranteed to remain at today’s levels until 2030. The market for HBM used in AI accelerators differs from desktop DRAM. For sim racers, memory capacity has become increasingly relevant. iRacing currently lists 16 GB as its minimum and recommended configuration, while its high-end specification calls for 32 GB or more. Le Mans Ultimate recommends 16 GB. Drivers who also run telemetry tools, overlays, streaming software, browsers or other applications alongside the simulator can add further memory pressure.
This makes RAM pricing worth considering when planning a new sim racing PC. A 32 GB system offers more headroom for demanding configurations, although the ideal capacity still depends on the simulator and accompanying software. The important point is that buyers should not automatically assume memory will return to historically low prices in the near future simply because previous shortages eventually disappeared.
AMD Zen 6 Looks Set to Keep AM5 Alive
AMD has also provided the strongest evidence yet that Zen 6 desktop processors will continue using Socket AM5. Entries briefly visible in AMD’s own Technical Information Portal associated the upcoming Olympic Ridge family with AM5, while Medusa1 appeared for both AM5 and the mobile FP10 platform. Medusa2 was listed for FP10.
AMD removed the relevant information, so this should not be treated as a conventional Zen 6 product announcement. However, theus leak. That could be particularly useful for sim racers because CPU performance remains important in scenarios involving large fields, AI cars and high frame-rate targets. VR users and triple-screen setups can also place additional pressure on the overall system, making a future processor upgrade attractive without necessarily replacing the motherboard and the rest of the platform.
There are already reports suggesting Olympic Ridge could reach 24 cores and 48 threads, use a redesigned 12-core CCD and substantially increase cache capacity. Those specifications remain unconfirmed, however. AMD’s leaked documentation establishes the platform connection far more clearly than it establishes final core counts, clocks, cache sizes or retail release dates.
For sim racing specifically, the headline core count may not even be the most important detail. Many simulators benefit heavily from strong per-core performance, low latency and efficient cache behavior. Until independent benchmarks exist, a theoretical 24-core Zen 6 processor should not automatically be considered the best future sim racing CPU.
The more practical takeaway today is simpler: an existing AM5 platform appears to retain another meaningful upgrade path. Anyone building around Ryzen 7000 or Ryzen 9000 hardware may therefore have the option to move to Zen 6 later without replacing the entire motherboard platform, although individual motherboard support will still depend on BIOS and manufacturer support.
The DLSS 5 Leak Is Interesting, but Sim Racers Should Be Cautious
NVIDIA officially announced DLSS 5 in March 2026, with a planned release this fall. The technology introduces a real-time Neural Rendering model intended to improve materials and lighting using AI. NVIDIA describes it as a major step beyond conventional upscaling, although no major sim racing title has currently been announced as a DLSS 5 launch partner.
The new development is that an experimental NVIDIA library named nvngx_dlssnr.dll appeared inside the early-access PC build of NBA 2K27. Modders extracted the file and quickly managed to run the Neural Rendering component in other games, with Control becoming one of the first public demonstrations.
Early performance figures show why sim racers should avoid drawing conclusions from image comparisons alone. One unofficial test on an RTX 5070 Ti at 4K dropped from approximately 71 FPS to 35 FPS when Neural Rendering was enabled. These numbers come from an experimental mod using unfinished software and should not represent final DLSS 5 performance.
Modders have since patched the library to work on RTX 40-series hardware as well. An RTX 4090 demonstration in Control reportedly fell from around 130 FPS to roughly 82 FPS when using the modified implementation. Again, this is unsupported software running outside NVIDIA’s intended integration and cannot establish final compatibility or performance.
The implications for sim racing could eventually be significant. Triple-screen and VR users often prioritize stable frame rates, low latency and predictable frame times over additional visual processing. A rendering technique that dramatically improves image quality but consumes half the available performance would be difficult to justify in those environments unless developers can substantially optimize it.
On the other hand, Neural Rendering could potentially become interesting for cockpits, track surfaces, night lighting, materials and environments if developers integrate it carefully. Racing simulators contain many surfaces with strong real-world references, which may suit a technology designed around more realistic materials and illumination.
For now, there is no confirmed DLSS 5 implementation in iRacing, Assetto Corsa EVO, Le Mans Ultimate or another major racing simulator. The leaked runtime therefore provides an interesting technical preview rather than something sim racers should currently use to make a GPU purchase decision.
Xbox Physical Racing Games Can Gain Digital Access
Microsoft is also testing a feature that could matter to players with large physical racing-game collections. Starting August 31, Xbox Insiders can claim a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games by inserting the original disc into a compatible console and launching the title.
The physical disc continues to work after the entitlement is claimed. Where supported by the individual game, the digital entitlement can also provide access to features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft says the initial test covers thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games support the system.
For racing fans, this could make older physical collections easier to carry into Microsoft’s increasingly digital ecosystem. However, support must be checked game by game. Microsoft’s announcement does not confirm that every physical Forza, F1, WRC or other racing title will automatically qualify, so individual compatibility should not be assumed.
The feature is particularly interesting from a preservation perspective. Racing games frequently disappear from digital stores because of expiring vehicle, music or circuit licences. Giving supported physical copies a digital entitlement could help owners retain easier access to games that may eventually become difficult or impossible to purchase digitally.
It does not eliminate the value of physical ownership. Microsoft specifically says the original disc remains functional, which makes the system closer to adding a digital entitlement to an existing physical licence rather than exchanging one format for another.
