    • Philippine School of Interior Design’s “What the Pop!” exhibit translates Filipino pop culture across generations into eight immersive interior spaces
    • Concepts draw from childhood games, mid-century homes, 1970s music and social realities, 1990s romance, gaming, commuting and coffee culture
    • The graduating batch showcase runs throughout October at the third floor of V-Mall in Greenhills, San Juan City

The Philippine School of Interior Design is putting Filipino nostalgia at the center of contemporary interiors with “What the Pop!,” an exhibit exploring how music, fashion, traditions and technology can shape living spaces.

Created by PSID’s graduating batch, the month-long showcase features eight booths interpreting pop culture through the experiences of Baby Boomers, millennials and Gen Z, turning familiar cultural touchpoints into design concepts.

The exhibit shows how interior design can preserve cultural memory while adapting it for new generations, using distinctly Filipino experiences as the foundation for spaces meant to feel both personal and contemporary.

Toyang, for example, combines Bauhaus geometry with childhood games including sungka, piko, trumpo and sipa. TeleBisyon looks further back, recreating a 1940s-to-1960s Filipino mid-century modern home with capiz windows, solihiya, banigand vintage appliances.

Istambay approaches the 1970s through a Brutalist-inspired bar lounge. Weathered iron, industrial materials and protest-inspired artwork evoke the struggles and resistance beneath the period’s surface.

Tunog Kalye explores the same decade through music, filling a vintage listening room with radios, cassette tapes, speakers and album-inspired artworks.

Millennial-focused Karisma channels the bold “bebot era” through a colorful walk-in closet and vanity, while Tealik takes inspiration from 1990s Filipino romantic films for an intimate bedroom built around soft hues, tactile upholstery and layered surfaces.

Gen Z gets its own interpretations.  Aliwan Ave. transforms the everyday MRT commute into a gaming and entertainment sanctuary through linear lighting and transit-inspired details. SIMULA imagines a newlywed couple’s residential dining space, placing a coffee bar at the heart of daily life.

Together, the installations position interiors as more than functional environments. They become repositories of collective memory, showing how design can reinterpret experiences ranging from traditional Filipino games to mass transit and digital entertainment.

“What the Pop!” runs for the entire month of October at V-Mall in Greenhills, with the project supported by a roster of design, construction, furniture, lifestyle and technology partners. —Ramon C. Nocon | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
