Sometimes all you need is a manga that feels like a warm hug. From comforting slice-of-life stories to sweet romances and lovable characters, wholesome manga offers the perfect escape from everyday stress.
In this first part, we are going to cover only four manga, but don’t underestimate it; you will definitely be hooked on it! Ready for cozy reading? Then definitely bookmark the list, because you will love it!
A Man and His Cat:
A manga that took my heart. It’s one of the most emotional reads, and I might be biased for this one. But it’s criminally underrated, even though it’s the best in its genre. Just a caution: if you are going to start reading this one, keep tissues with you because it will make you cry your heart out from day 1.
The story is super simple. It follows the life of a lonely, middle-aged man named Kanda Fuyuki, who adopts an older cat, often called ugly, that no one else wanted from a pet shop.
Because why would someone go for an older cat if they have the option to get cute kitties? But Kanda, instead of going for kitties, picked the older cat. He named him Fukumaru.
Fukumaru had always spent his entire life being ignored because of his looks, believing he would never be chosen or adopted by anyone.
So when Kanda finally takes him home, it becomes an emotional turning point (trust me on this, it will break you). Fukumaru never felt such overwhelming love and care in his entire life but now finally has someone to call dad and a home where he belongs.
Strawberry Marshmallow:
I would call this one super hilarious rather than wholesome, but don’t worry; you will find this comforting as you will definitely feel a deeper connection to the characters.
Sometimes the manga gets really slow and makes you feel nostalgic, taking you back to when you were a kid and used to enjoy your daily fun games with your friends without the worries of the world.
So, we have a lot of characters in the story, especially the girl gang: Chika Itou, Nobue Itou, Miu Matsuoka, Matsuri Sakuragi, and Ana Coppola.
It portrays the daily lives of them all together as they keep exploring things that will add special moments to their lives. Super duper fun and relaxing, but trust me, sometimes it gets so chaotic that your jaw will hurt with laughter.
Natsume’s Book of Friends:
Natsume’s Book of Friends is one of the manga that you can go for on our list. It’s just so wholesome yet so mind-blowing at the same time. It gets kinda eerie in between, but if that’s something that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can skip this one. But more or less, it’s a super comforting manga.
In short, if I have to summarise the plot, it is the story of the life of a boy, Takashi Natsume, who can see spirits and inherits the mysterious Book of Friends from his grandmother. It can be a really dangerous power to wield, but rather than misusing it, he lets go of all the spirits’/yokai’s names written in the book that his grandmother had taken.
Super simple yet complex, plus it has a lot of seasons and movies to binge. What else could you ask for?
Gugure! Kokkuri-san
This one is nothing serious, but pure fun! If you just want to wind up your day with a lot of giggles and laughter, then this wholesomely funny manga might be the best pick for you.
The story begins with a lonely, emotionless girl, Kohina Ichimatsu, who summons a fox spirit, Kokkuri-san, just for fun. But she didn’t expect that she had summoned an overprotective guardian for herself, not a spirit that would haunt her.
We get a lot of spirits of different kinds that get attached to Kohina as the story progresses, and it gets chaotic yet heartwarming to watch them all together, living a fulfilling life. No over-the-top drama, yet satisfying.
