Pop Girls Unite: How The Collab Has Become The Ultimate Release
There is indeed more than enough room for more women to succeed

‘Stateside’ has well and truly taken over my playlists this year.
Whether it was on repeat through the summer months or practically begging taxi drivers to blast it on the way to the club, I can safely say I’ve done my bit to get this song the recognition it deserves.
So, as the baton passes from Zara Larsson and PinkPantheress to Olies are far from finished joining forces
While pop music has never fallen short of a classic lover’s duet or gut-wrenching heartbreak anthem, there is something particularly refreshing about the current influx of female collaborations. Instead of centring solely on romance, rivalry or the trials and tribulations of a relationship, these songs celebrate female confidence, friendship and the joy of women coming together.
Embracing femininity in all forms, from unapologetic feel good ballads to honest expressions of insecurity, creates such contagious energy. So when these female artists come together to champion one another, they continue to prove that some of the biggest moments in music happen when the girls unite.

The pop girls have been joining forces for decades. Long before ‘Stateside’ became a summer staple, Christina Aguilera, Mýa, Lil’ Kim and P!nk proved serious girl power in ‘Lady Marmalade’, while Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s ‘Telephone’ took the music video scene by storm.
Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande later delivered the ultimate girl power soundtrack ‘Bang Bang’, while Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’became an unapologetically bold celebration of female confidence and sexuality in 2020.
These collaborations have become more than just a collection of famous names, but an ally of different voices, personalities, styles and beliefs, all put on the table to create playful, provocative, emotional and empowering masterpieces that leave us wanting to hit replay.
PinkPatheress and Zara Larsson’s ‘Stateside’ remix is a perfect example of two artists bringing their own identities to the same track. PinkPantheress’s distinctive production and Zara’s confident pop vocals complement one another without either losing what makes them unique.
It is the kind of song that gets stuck in your head after one listen, and I for one, have certainly played my part in making sure everyone around me knows every word.
Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey’s ‘Snow on the Beach’ offers a softer take on this idea. Lana’s contribution to the song shows that rather than needing to dominate the track with a separate verse, her layered vocals complemented Taylor’s, adding to the song’s angelic tone.
Lana spoke in an interview with Universal Music Publishing in regards to the song, admitting that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It is a lovely reminder that collaborating does not always mean taking centre stage. Lana showed that sometimes it is about recognising what the other artist is trying to create and finding a way to make it even better.
Then, there is the unexpected pairing of Billie Eilish on the remix of Charli xcx’s ‘Guess’.Playful and provocative, it brought two artists with very different musical identities together for a hit that ended up making perfect sense – who would’ve thought. It goes to show that not every collab needs to hide some deeper message amongst the verse. Sometimes, it is just about having fun and reworking an already brilliant song.
However, when artists challenge one another creatively, share their audiences and give each other room to shine, the results can have a profound impact, and mean more than just the numbers on the streaming platform.
Take Charli xcx and Lorde’s ‘Girl, So Confusing’ remix. The original track, sharing its title on the BRAT album along with ‘Guess’,explores Charli’s feelings of insecurity and comparison towards another female artist, leaving fans (myself included) speculating the hidden identity of who she was referring to.

When Lorde joined the remix, the song took on a whole new meaning. Her appearance on the remix transformed the song into a vulnerable and honest exchange between two women of the track, head on. The remix shows how collabs can change the meaning of a song entirely – and their performance together at Coachella in 2025 brought the moment to a full circle.
Lorde did not simply add another verse; she brought her own perspective to a story that was already being told, to give it a whole new dimension.
Pop culture’s latest pairing has brought together two of the most influential names in contemporary pop, and that is Oli
Having opened for Oli one another for years, making this collaboration all the more exciting
Chappell brings her own signature attitude to the song, complementing Oli exactly what makes these collaborations so brilliant – their own takes on identity, relationships and self-expression to the table, without compromising what makes them unique

And when both women are so vocal about the causes they care about, from women’s rights to LGBTQ+ communities, it is so refreshing to see their worlds collide, and bringing their fanbases together in the process.
In an industry where women are constantly put against each other, it is invigorating to see these women break the standards and come together to uplift one another. As listeners, we are reminded that there is indeed enough room for more women to succeed.
