A subsidiary of Nippon Ichi Software, the publisher introduces lesser-known JRPGs to Western audiences. Physical games and Collector’s Editions are a critical part of its inventory. However, conversations with Sony have given the company hope of finding a middle ground.
Behind the scenes dialogue
At PAX West, Kotaku spoke to Kenzo Saruhashi, Nippon Ichi CEO and NIS America President. Despite PlayStation planning to stop producing Blu-Rays for new releases, the publisher will “continue making those physical editions” it’s known for. The digital code-in-the-box redemption that GTA 6 offers is an option, but it likely won’t satisfy some loyal customers.
Notably, the company has been in contact with Sony, where one topic was the transition to digital games. Saruhashi reveals the gaming giant has been “hearing a lot of the feedback from customers.” So far, there are no concrete signs of reversing its decision, but the “discussion may change in the future.”
Recently, indications suggest PlayStation has privately become more receptive to physical game advocates. Since making the unwelcome announcement on July 1st, it has faced unrelenting protests on social media. While it ignored the posts, a survey sent to developers reportedly acknowledged the criticism.
YouTuber and leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead claimed Sony indirectly asked partners about their concerns over the future of PS5 discs. The survey and the console maker addressing the subject with NIS America are evidence that it may be softening its stance.
The path forward
One scenario is that PlayStation supports physical games in a limited fashion. Blu-ray factories will stay open in 2028 to print media for existing releases. Sony could also use the remaining capacity for discs shipped as part of Collector’s Editions.
Without a solution, NIS America may have no choice but to turn to competitors. The publisher already sells JRPGs on multiple platforms, including Xbox, Switch, and Switch 2. Nintendo is unlikely to abandon cartridges entirely in favor of digital games. That said, it has encountered resistance to the download-dependent Game-Key Card format.
