PlayStation fans have moved from angry comments to a coordinated protest, organizing a real-world action meant to send a message directly to Sony.

The campaign asks players to pull back from the platform entirely for a set stretch of time, with dedicated gamers opting to forego playing or using PlayStation’s services as part of the boycott.

    Fans Start PlayStation Blackout Movement

The protest, known as #PSBlackout, was organized by DoesItPlay, a community group focused on video game preservation, alongside several other creators.

In an earlier post announcing the movement, the organizer said, “We want physical games to stay! A digital-only future without ownership & customer protection law is unacceptable! Log off, don’t play, don’t purchase, cancel subscriptions, become a ghost, until Sony realizes their mistake! #PhysicalGamesMatter.”

The boycott officially began on August 23 at 7 PM local time, with organizers originally framing it as a one-week effort. After facing scrutiny over how short that window was, DoesItPlay later updated the terms, stating the blackout would now continue not for a fixed week but “until Sony realizes their mistake,” extending the protest indefinitely rather than ending it after a single week regardless of outcome.

    The #PSBlackout starts tomorrow!

    Fans Boycott Logins, Purchases, Services

Participants are being asked to avoid logging into PlayStation Network, skip any online play sessions, and refrain from making purchases through the PlayStation Store across every Sony platform. Some fans have pushed the idea even further, suggesting mass cancellation of PlayStation Plus subscriptions as an additional way to signal displeasure with the company’s direction.

A related Change.org petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc” has continued gathering support alongside the blackout, climbing past 347,000 signatures. Even so, reaction within the gaming community itself has been mixed, with some players questioning whether a temporary boycott can meaningfully affect a platform with tens of millions of paying subscribers.

Other fans cannot let go of gaming, especially since the protest window overlaps with notable releases like the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4” beta and games including “Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 2” and “Star Wars Zero Company.”

Digital already? Sony killing discs will sadly impact you too. Don’t stand for a lack of customer rights. Show them that you want to own what you pay hard earned $$$ for. #PSBlackout NOW! Don’t buy, don’t play, stay offline until they realize their mistake. pic.twitter.com/b2exBwD4B0

The blackout traces directly back to Sony’s infamous announcement that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. That decision has continued fueling frustration well beyond just the disc issue itself.

This created a domino effect where some organizers point to a broader pattern of grievances, including the closure of studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studio, and PlayStation VR2’s fading support. Additionally, it brought up the discontinuation of long-dormant franchises as part of what they see as Sony drifting from its core audience.

Sony has largely stayed quiet on the growing backlash, with the company’s chief financial officer previously reaffirming that Sony plans to “cautiously move this forward” despite continued criticism.

As the blackout stretches on without a defined end date, it remains unclear whether Sony will respond directly to the protest or continue proceeding with its digital-only transition as originally planned, regardless of how loud the pushback from fans becomes.
