Americana Cosplay, the new immersive Fringe experience from the performance collective Die-Cast, invites its audience to reckon with this country’s “forefather fetish”. At the beginning of the performance—which unfolds across multiple rooms simultaneously at Arch Street Meeting House through September 20—spectators are instructed to follow their own path, moving from space to space and sitting with numerous constructed American identities. The task, really, is simple, in the words of one host: pick your myth.
Ensemble-developed and directed by Brenna Geffers, Americana Cosplaypointedly begins in 1876: a decade after the Civil War, and the point at which Reconstruction gave way to open repression. This choice allows distance from the benign positivity of the country’s creation story, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence seeming as far away as the Garden of Eden.
Instead, the various rooms show how that place and time created many of the constructions that persist today. My journey began with a funny and piquant burlesque featuring Ross Beschler and Carlo Campbell, which lampooned the theatrics of cowboy culture. It continued on to a faux-bondage encounter between Beschler and Jarod Hanson, which cast historical recreation as a kind of kink play.
Given the show’s structure, it’s impossible to see every vignette in its entirely. But sometimes a splash is just enough. I walked in on the tail-end of an impassioned monologue delivered by Kishia Nixon, decrying the vapidity of empty patriotic platitudes, and was momentarily transfixed.
At other times, I rolled my eyes. A too-long scene between Colleen Corcoran and Griffin Stanton-Ameisen seems designed merely to elicit easy whoops and snaps from a liberal-leaning audience. Some of the show’s messaging has the subtlety of a tire iron to the skull.
But these deficiencies can be ignored in the moments that really work. I’ll not soon forget the intense physicality or wry humor that Anthony Crosby brings to a Confederate widow, a Scarlett O’Hara manqué who argues the past is the only thing that makes life worth living. Or the music arranged by Chris Sannino and performed, largely by Kristen Kunkle, that evokes the era with such specificity.
When Americana Cosplayallows its audience to sit with the awkwardness of patriotism and mythmaking, rather than shoving it down our throats, it achieves its goal sublimely.
