    • Netflix teen drama Outer Banks, starring Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes, has officially ended after its fifth season, following a group of friends in North Carolina on a hunt for lost treasure.
    • The decision to end Outer Banks after five seasons reflects a trend on Netflix of shorter series, as the streaming landscape differs from traditional broadcast TV, where long-running shows were once a measure of success.
    • Despite the end of Outer Banks, its creators are working on a prequel series called Kildare, set 20 years before the original show, as the cast members, including Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes, move on to other projects.

Teen drama Outer Banks has been one of Netflix’s most dependable hits. But with its fifth and final season now streaming, the show has officially come to an end.

The show, which stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss and Drew Starkey, follows a group of friends in North Carolina who get swept up in a dangerous hunt for lost treasure.

Season 4, which was released in late 2024, shot to the top of Netflix’s weekly TV chart with 15.5 million views in its first week. Despite that success, Netflix announced soon after that the show would end with Season 5.

Outer Banks isn’t alone in having a relatively short run. Legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer has also been renewed for a fifth and final installment, while action thriller The Night Agent is ending after four seasons. Then there are shows like You, The Umbrella Academy, Sex Education, Cobra KaiandShadow and Bone, none of which ran for more than six seasons.

Many of these series ranked among the streamer’s biggest successes, and some could conceivably have continued for years. So why are so many Netflix shows wrapping up relatively early?

The most obvious reason is that the streaming landscape is radically different from broadcast TV. We’ve become used to seeing shows like NCIS, Law & Order and Grey’s Anatomy on the air for decades, serving as comforting fare for years on end.

The longevity of a show was once a major measure of its success, even as production costs rose and stars commanded higher salaries. By the 10th and final season of Friends, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox were said to be earning $1 million per episode — up from a reported $22,500 per episode in the first season.

Streaming has changed that equation. Netflix has increasingly built its slate around shorter series that can be watched from beginning to end, rather than relying primarily on shows designed to run indefinitely.

Long-running hits are increasingly being replaced with a steady pipeline of new content designed to keep subscribers watching. One major exception is romantic drama Virgin River, which has been renewed for an eighth season, making it Netflix’s longest-running scripted series. For fans attached to their favorite shows, modern TV can feel disposable — no matter how successful a series becomes.

There are practical reasons for a show to end. The Outer Banks cast is far busier now than when the show began in 2020. Cline, one of its breakout stars, has juggled the series with roles in movies including Glass Onion and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Next year, she’ll appear on the big screen alongside Johnny Depp in the thriller Day Drinker and Glen Powell in the comedy The Comeback King.

In the case of Outer Banks, however, its creators have said five seasons was always the plan, according to a statement issued in November 2024 from series creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke. The team promised its final chapter would bring the adventure to a conclusion. “Season 5 will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet,” they added.

And while Outer Banks itself is over, its world may live on. The show’s creators are writing a prequel series, tentatively titled Kildare, set 20 years before the events of the original series. “We’re working on the script,” Josh Pate told Deadline. “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”

Stokes told People that he and his costars are “thankful” for the show but “ready for it to be done.” He added, “We want the story to end on the right note, vs. [turning] four seasons into season nine and we’re going after aliens or something. We want to cut the cord before we lose the plot.”

Meanwhile, Cline called the final season “another big journey.” She told Parade, “It’s just as every season has been: it’s wild, and I just hope that people are enjoying how we’ve landed the plane. I hope it’s something they’re happy with, so they can continue to go and rewatch.”
