‘Oswald’ Comes to Life in New Disney+ Series Blending Live Action & Animation

    August 17, 2026, 5:02 pm

    Disney+

For Jon Favreau‘s next big Disney+ project, he’s reaching back into the annals of Disney history to revive a character who played an important role in the studio’s beginnings and meant a great deal to Walt Disney himself.

Oswald is an upcoming three-part comedy miniseries blending live-action with hand-drawn 2D animation and bringing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney’s original animated star from 1927, into the modern world.

Created by Favreau for Disney+, the series marks a major new chapter for one of Disney’s oldest characters, bringing Oswald back to the screen nearly 100 years after he first made his debut. Read on for everything we know so far.

    When does Oswald premiere?

The series will premiere on February 17, 2027, exclusively on Disney+.

    Who stars in Oswald?

The cast includes Albert Brooks, Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ryder Allen.

    What is Oswald about?

The story begins when an earthquake frees Oswald from the place where he’s been hidden since the 1920s, leading a middle-school boy and his friends to help the mischievous rabbit navigate a world that’s changed dramatically during his nearly century-long absence.

This new show is a hybrid mix of live-action and animation, similar to milestone Disney pics likeMary Poppins and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Announced at D23, Favreau told a roaring audience that “Oswald and his story always intrigued me; now, ten years later, the project is finally complete and coming to Disney+.”

    Who is Oswald?

Oswald was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 for Universal Pictures and became a pivotal character in Disney history. After Universal took control of Oswald from Walt Disney in 1928, Disney and Iwerks went on to create Mickey Mouse, forever changing the course of the studio. However, Disney always lamented the loss of Oswald.

The Walt Disney Company eventually reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006, nearly eight decades after losing the character. The original 1927 version of Oswald entered the public domain in 2023.

He was reintroduced into pop culture with the 2010 video game Epic Mickey, and in 2013, the rabbit made his first appearance on the big screen in 80 years in the Oscar-winning animated short “Get a Horse!”

    Who is behind Oswald?

Oswald is directed by Jon Favreau, Jude Weng, and Andrew R. Jones based on the original Oswald the Lucky Rabbit by Walt Disney, and created by Favreau. The executive producers are Favreau, Andrew R. Jones, Karen Gilchrist, and John Bartnicki

    Is there a trailer?

Not yet <a href="https://comicvibe.com/a-hogwarts-legacy-sequel-is-officially-in-development/” title=”A Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Is Officially In Development”>officially. There was a first look at D23, but as of the writing of this article, Disney has not released the first look or a trailer for the upcoming series.
