Between the announcements of Ghost Rider and Black Panther III, the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the tantalising latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the last week or so has probably been one of the best in recent memory for Marvel fans. So naturally, of course, to take the shine off just a touch, there had to be some bad news to follow all the good. And that news? Well, per Variety‘s reporting, Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest’s Disney+ hit Wonder Man has just been cancelled… four months after scoring a Season 2 renewal at the streamer.
Having released to critical acclaim back in January, landing star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II a richly deserved Emmy nomination for his turn as struggling actor with a superpowered secret Simon Williams, news of Wonder Man‘s renewal in March was somewhat unexpected but very welcomely received (the show’s unceremonious full-season boxset drop on Disney+ hadn’t exactly filled us with hope of further adventures to come.) Today’s news then is a bit of a head scratcher, especially in light of Variety‘s coverage indicating that a writers’ room for Season 2 was never even opened and that the show’s writers have all been let go to take on other projects now.
One silver lining amid this disappointing development is that it’s Variety‘s sources’ understanding that while Wonder Man may not return for a second season, its characters — including Simon Williams and his thespian bestie Trevor Slattery (Sir Ben Kingsley) — may yet appear in other MCU projects in the future. Thus, our dreams of the Great Lake Avengers’ Marvel Cinematic Universe debut live on, even if Wonder Man itself sadly does not. Simon Williams, Doorman, Von Kovak, you will always be famous.
