Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson is seeking to lead a class-action lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the gaming platform of misleading investors about child-safety protections.
The Attorney General’s Office filed a motion Aug. 7 seeking permission for Ohio’s public pension systems to take the lead in the case on behalf of investors. A federal judge in California is scheduled to consider the request Sept. 17. If approved, the pension systems would represent investors in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges Roblox promoted itself as a safe place for children while failing to adequately protect them from predators and inappropriate content. Investors allegedly lost money after Roblox said stricter safety measures slowed user growth and forced the company to cut its 2026 bookings forecast by $1 billion.
Here’s what the lawsuit claims and where the case goes from here.
Why Ohio is involved in a Roblox lawsuit
The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio say they lost a combined $21.5 million after investing in Roblox. The lawsuit seeks to recover those losses.
“Roblox lied to investors and failed to protect children from online predators,” Wilson said in a statement. “We’re taking action to recover millions in lost pension funds and to make it clear that tech companies must be held accountable when they put kids in harm’s way.”
Ohio AG Andy Wilson: ‘They need to be held accountable’
Asked why Ohio is seeking to lead the case now, Wilson said protecting children online remains a top priority for his office.
“The internet is the wild, wild west and when companies fail to take action that they need to take to protect our kids, then they need to be held accountable for that. That’s part of this lawsuit,” Wilson told The Columbus Dispatch.
Wilson added that, as a father of two children who use apps, he wants online platforms to be as safe as possible.
Other states have sued Roblox over child safety
This isn’t the first time the gaming platform has been at the center of child safety concerns.
While Ohio’s case focuses on investor losses, several other states have filed lawsuits alleging Roblox failed to adequately protect children on the platform. The list includes Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Indiana, who have all filed lawsuits against Roblox this year.
How Roblox has responded
Roblox has denied allegations that it intentionally put children at risk. In response to similar lawsuits, Roblox has said it uses measures such as chat filters, restricts some messaging for younger users and works with child-safety organizations.
