At today’s “House of Ideas” panel at New York Comic Con, Marvel unveiled a few new titles that will help chart the course forward for The World Outside Your Window, the first major new project from a returning fan-favorite creator…and a one-shot that’s set to skewer the Marvel U like never before.
The first announcement was for Immortal Soldiers #1, a new one-shot from Avengers scribe Chip Zdarsky and artist Christian Rosado. Here’s how Marvel describes the January-shipping issue, which was debuted with one of its variant covers by Mark Chiarello:
Avengers: Armageddon didn’t end the war – it started one! An explosive one-shot setting the stage for a new year of stories and mysteries. With the world no longer trusting super heroes to save them, Earth still needs saving. Who will step up to the plate and keep watch over the planet when we need it the most?
Who indeed! Probably Nick Fury, right? That’s definitely him on that cover. He’s been trying to set up a new version of S.H.I.E.L.D., after all.
In completely unexpected news, the panel next unveiled What The–?! #1, a new humor anthology one-shot out in January. The special features an all-star creative lineup of Marvel’s most mischievous merrymakers delivering a delightful display of laughable larks, lampooning everything readers know and love about Marvel Comics. Here’s the creative team list and interior info:
BECAUSE NO ONE (BUT STEPHEN WACKER) DEMANDED IT: WHAT THE–?! RETURNS FROM OBLIVION! FROM THE ASHES…wait, no, let me start over. THE LIGHT HAD ITS — no, that’s not it either… WHO SAYS A COMIC HAS TO BE GOOD??? THE MARVEL MAG OF MIRTH AND MAYHEM brings you the most serious, intelligent and all-around thought-provoking stories to the comics page. Not just words — it’s pictures too! In good ol’ CMYK! In your hands, YOU HAVE THE POWER! THE POWER…to spend $4.99 (plus tax, in NJ) to preserve the Marvel Legacy you know and love. Comics are supposed to be fun!
Which superhero will Not Chip Zdarsky dress up as to promote this book?
On the Mutant side of the Marvel U, the publisher announced that the current X-Orcists miniseries by Ashley Allen and German Peralta is now an ongoing series. They also revealed the cover by Ben Harvey and solicit info for January’s X-Orcists #3:
The X-Orcists wade deeper into a mystical mire! They’re following the trail of the harrowing Mawhound, a Limbo demon with the ability to possess people and amplify their abilities. Along the way, Magik, Madelyne Pryor, Juggernaut and Bloodline add another ally to their roster — the ultimate monster-slayer, ELSA BLOODSTONE! But is it enough to stop an Omega-level threat?
Next on the docket was the long-simmering Hulk War storyline, which finally explodes into an event miniseries beginning in February. Hulk War: Infernal Rage is with art and main covers by Nic Klein. Johnson described the series to the panel audience as Act 3 of his run on the Hulk
Here’s how Marvel describes the series:
The war has arrived. As the remaining heroes race to find the weapon that could turn the tide, the Infernal Hulk declares the Marvel Universe his new kingdom, spreading his corruption as a battle rages both within and beyond his twisted mind.
The other big piece of news from the panel came towards the end, as a video announcement from Brian Michael Bendis revealed that he, Andrea Sorrentino, and Dave Stewart will team for Magneto: End of Days, a new eight-issue miniseries kicking off in February. Described as a ‘prestige miniseries,’ the series marks Bendis’s first major project for Marvel since his recent return to the publisher.
The announcement was accompanied by a few preview pages or the first issue, as well as a slew of cover art by artists including Sorrentino, Alex Maleev, Jerome Opena, and Netho Diaz. Here are those pages and covers, as well as the description for the series:
From the near future where the choices Magneto made play out in very surprising ways to new insights into the pivotal eras of his past, MAGNETO: END OF DAYS is a revelatory look at an explosive life of conviction and contradiction that shaped the X-Men and the entire Marvel Universe, with guest stars galore!
Next up, current Daredevil writer Stephanie Phillips joined the panel to tease an upcoming project with artist Eric Canete. A few preview images were displayed, but no title or additional information on the series were revealed.
“We thought that we were going to be laughed at and told to go home,” Phillips said of pitching the mystery series to Tom Brevoort, but instead they got an ongoing series order. More to come on what this book is in the future.
To close out the panel, writer Kevin Smith joined the panel to discuss Star Wars|Marvel: Hope Assembles, the forthcoming crossover celebrating Star Wars’s 50th anniversary. Smith told the crowd that Star Wars|Marvel is “in continuity,” and said that, while working on the series, “We had to ask like 12 different adults to see if a lightsaber can cut through adamantium.” The series has been extended from five issues to six, Smith said.
Smith also offered fans a first look at interior artwork by Dave Marquez from the series’ first issue.
Variant covers by Alex Ross, Kaare Andrews, and Dan Jurgens were also unveiled for the first time, with Smith remarking that “Spidey and Luke will spend a lot of time with each other” upon the reveal of the Ross cover.
