Nvidia reportedly plans to discontinue the GeForce RTX 5090 as AI hardware takes priority

It will become increasingly difficult to own the most powerful PC on the market. According to some reports, Nvidiamay be discontinuing production of the GeForce RTX 5090, including the RTX 5090 D variants.

According to the latest reports from leakers @honzing2020 and @Zed__Wang (via Tom’s Hardware), Nvidia has reportedly stopped selling its GB202 graphics processors for consumer-grade GeForce RTX 5090-series add-in cards, which were launched earlier this year. The reported plan would redirect GB202 graphics processors toward data center and professional applications instead of consumer gaming hardware. The card has become a highly sought-after item, with a price that was around $2,000 USD at launch and has since risen to $5,000 or even higher. The move would leave the newly announced 24GB GeForce RTX 5080 as Nvidia’s most powerful consumer graphics card. The 16GB version of the RTX 5080 would reportedly be discontinued as well.

Although the reports remain unconfirmed, the alleged decision would align with Nvidia’s focus on professional computing and AI hardware. Redirecting GB202 processors toward professional and data center products could generate higher returns than selling the same silicon in consumer gaming cards.

    A strategic economic shift

If Nvidia does discontinue its GB202-based GeForce products, the company could reduce competition between its consumer graphics cards and its more expensive professional offerings. With semiconductor manufacturing capacity limited, allocating production to products with higher profit margins could be an attractive business decision.

The most significant potential consequence would be a change to Nvidia’s high-end gaming lineup. If the leaked information proves accurate, the 24GB RTX 5080 would become the company’s flagship consumer graphics card, while the 16GB model would also leave the market.

However, the reports do not establish how Nvidia would manage existing inventory or whether the alleged discontinuation would affect retail availability immediately. The company has yet to confirm any changes to its GeForce RTX 50-series production plans.
