Noah Wyle has officially been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026, adding another milestone to his career resurgence thanks to HBO Max’s The Pitt. The 55-year-old actor, who first became a household name playing Dr. John Carter on ER, admits he initially thought the magazine’s offer was a joke.
“I thought that sounded like a prank — just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me,” Wyle tells People in an interview published Tuesday, October 27.
His wife, Sara, needed considerably less convincing.
“She thinks I’m a good guy and that the kind of person that I am and the kind of father I am, the kind of husband I am, is worth promoting,” Wyle explains. He adds that Sara was particularly happy because the recognition “reflects well on her taste.”
The announcement arrives during another major chapter in Wyle’s career. His performance as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on The Pitt has earned him two consecutive Best Actor Emmy Awards, and the medical drama returns for its third season in January.
Wyle describes the show’s success as the “second lightning strike in my life,” referencing the career breakthrough he experienced decades earlier on ER.
That connection makes his latest recognition particularly fitting. During the 1990s, Wyle appeared alongside George Clooney, Eriq La Salle, and Anthony Edwards on People‘s “Sexy Men of ER” cover. Clooney eventually received the magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive title twice, while Wyle continued building his career without the distinction.
Asked how his former costar might react, Wyle jokes that Clooney will hopefully feel “like a proud papa, that I’ve come of gray-haired age.”
Wyle also acknowledges that navigating fame looks considerably different this time around.
“The Pitt gives me the opportunity to do it differently than I did the first time — with a little bit more presence and a little bit more composure,” he explains.
His family has already started weighing in on the announcement. Wyle’s son Owen, 24, warns that the recognition could attract unwanted attention, while his daughter Auden, 21, apparently intends to tease him about it for years.
Meanwhile, the actor’s Malibu cover shoot included Sara, their 11-year-old daughter Frances, and the family’s chocolate Labrador, Lily. Wyle also demonstrated his household routine, including preparing breakfast, folding laundry, and washing dishes.
“I am the dish maven. The sink is my domain,” he tells People, adding that more men should consider washing dishes because he finds the activity therapeutic.
Despite his new title, Wyle admits that self-confidence doesn’t necessarily come naturally.
“I get self-conscious. It’s still the hardest kind of interaction for me, speaking without a script as myself,” he explains.
Wyle succeeds Jonathan Bailey, who won the Sexiest Man Alive title in 2025 ahead ofWicked: For Good‘s release. Bailey’s selection followed his appearances in Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers, and Jurassic World Rebirth.
For Wyle, the recognition comes more than three decades after his original television breakthrough, as The Pitt introduces him to another generation of viewers.
And while the magazine has officially settled the question of his sex appeal, Wyle makes clear that his priorities remain unchanged.
“I’ve got a wonderful wife. I’ve got wonderful kids,” he says. “I’m grateful for my work. I’m grateful for my colleagues.”
