Dominic Sessa is Tony in the new biopic

Film, food, fashion, music – it’s all culture…

Popular Instagram account No Fillercuts through the internet noise, with weekly lists from curator Anthony Remedy and guest creatives based at home and abroad. Anthony brings you his latest list below…

Restaurants in museums are notoriously difficult, despite working rather well in London, NYC and so on. Having recently dined at Margadh, I can say this restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner at the RHA, is probably the best version of this we have in the capital at the moment. Try the ricotta capolini, courgette, tomato and basil… summer on a plate. And definitely don’t forget to order the potato dauphine, terrific! Sister restaurant of Mamo in Howth, this is what all the Oirish restaurants downtown really want to be. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

The biggest fashion event of the year – strike that – the biggest event of the year in the country. Irish boy done good Jonathan Anderson is coming home to show the Dior Pre-Fall 2027 show at Trinity College. Exciting, right? Whilst I don’t think any of us will be in the room, never mind sitting beside Anna Wintour, it’s still fantastic for the city! In some ways, I don’t think Dublin really gets just how big of a deal this is. But Dior may not grasp how much Dublin loves a bandwagon. Man, we are going to be bandwagoning in a way we haven’t seen since the MTV European Music Awards back in ’99. I hope it’s a beautiful, crisp winter’s day, and I hope everyone, and I mean everyone, puts their best foot forward and looks stylish for the moment that’s in it. Obviously, I hope the collection is a showstopper. Also, as an aside, there will be someone out there who will get the golden invite, who would never get to attend a Dior show in a hundred years! Don’t be jealous. Put on the green bar jacket, and be happy for them.

64th New York Film Festival Poster by Marcel Dzama

Since 1963, an acclaimed artist designs the NYFF poster. It’s such a simple but brilliant idea that has stood the test of time. I have a few of them, actually (John Waters, Jeff Bridges and a few others), and genuinely look forward to seeing them every year! This year, Canadian artist Marcel Dzama joins the likes of Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Richard Avedon and many, many more… and it’s a banger. It’s available on pre-order now from Posteritati in NYC.

The opening scene of any film is important; some have lofty ideas, but it just doesn’t come together. Some really nail it, and that rocks. But every once in a while, some are so well done that they become part of the culture, from Devil Wears PradatoThe Godfather, Goodfellasto Boogie Nights. I remember seeing Nicolas Winding Refn’sDrivefor the first time; the opening was more akin to thunder than lightning. Sustained, modern, moody LA noir; it’s also the moment Gosling really arrived (I’m sorry,Notebook fans), but then Kavinsky’s Nightcallstarted to play, and the rest is history – a perfect track to accompany a near-perfect opener. In a matter of seconds, the scene becomes part of film-bro lore. Part of the Ed Banger family, Kavinsky’s sound is part and parcel of early 2000s French house, which Dublin adored; he played in Dublin’s Spy Club once too. He also played the track at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in 2024. Shows how well regarded it is. Sad to hear of anyone passing at such a young age (he was 50), but he, like Drive, will never be forgotten.

Miami Vice – 20 Years Later!

Watching the Michael Mann filmMiami Vice 20 years later, without the baggage that came with Mann’s adaptation of his classic 80s TV show – Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx most certainly aren’t channelling Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas – it plays like a sun-washed fever dream noir. The critics weren’t kind. The hand-held camera work, the incoherent plot, the sparse and often strange dialogue – the film is, at times, a mess, but a gripping mess. Or is it a mess? Is it precise? Like The Thin Red Line(go with me on this), you can dip in and out of Miami Vice at any time. Is there a start, is there any end? Some of us liked the film at the time; most viewed it as a film that was an also-ran, like most of Mann’s films (remember Heat didn’t receive one Oscar nomination – my college friends also hated it). But history is very kind to mavericks like Mann. Watch Miami Vice, embrace the pastels. Have a mojito.

As Seen Below – The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell in Copenhagen

When Turrell describes his newest work as his most ambitious Skyspace to date (he has designed 100), I’m booking my flights! His work is like serene magic in front of your eyes. I’ve been to his other permanent installation in Copenhagen,Aftershock, and it’s a mind-bending experience which I find hard to describe, like being Mike TV inCharlie And The Chocolate Factory. Ten years in the making, this new and highly anticipated massive installation has three ways to view it, depending on the time of day:Open Sky, Colour ShiftandTwilight. I want to experience all three. No point in me trying to describe it; I’m sure it’s like a dream.

For Dominic Sessa’s first major role since his breakthrough in The Holdovers, he takes on the formidable task of playing the chef, writer and TV star Anthony Bourdain. A person many have a deep affection for. Advance reviews, for the most part, have been very positive, which is a relief, and Sessa comes across as a guy who may just stick around for a while. I’m very happy to be presenting the advance screening of Matt Johnson’s movie at the gorgeous Stella Cinema in Dublin, on Sunday, Aug. 9th, complete with a post-screening chef and food critic panel – find out more here.

Dave Hanratty and Adam Shanahan’s long-running podcast crossed the 500-episode mark the other day. Some achievement in today’s here-today, gone-in-a-swipe period of life. The premise is simple: a guest chooses a theme and five songs that describe said theme. For instance, this week’s episode, where photographer Christian Tierney chooses his top five covers that are better than the originals. There is also a news section at the beginning discussing the recent news, from football to politics to Britney Spears. It’s a great listen. You have 505 in total to catch up on – dive in.
