Nintendo has made it very clear multiple times over that when it comes to The Legend of Zelda (and all of their games, really), they focus on gameplay ideas and mechanics first and then bring in the story tidbits afterwards. In other words, Nintendo won’t let things like timeline issues or continuity errors stop them from making the gameplay experience they want. Undeterred, diehard Legend of Zelda fans continue to dig deep into every Zelda game to see how it fits with all the others, and just this week there’s been a noteworthy tweak to the series’ timeline.

In what is always a rare occasion, Nintendo has made a small adjustment to the Legend of Zelda timeline on their official Japanese website, and it may have confirmed a long-running fan theory.

As you might know, the Legend of Zelda timeline splits into three different branches, and they all stem from Ocarina of Time. These timelines all come to an end, but then comes Breath of the Wild to unify things, followed by Tears of the Kingdom…which actually adds a whole bunch of confusion, as the game has Zelda traveling to the past to see the birth of Hyrule. Since then, fans have been wondering if Zelda saw the beginning of the original Hyrule from previous games or a brand-new one. Now we might have an answer.

In the official Legend of Zelda timeline update, Nintendo has added an entry for the founding of Hyrule just ahead of the time-traveling Zelda endures in Tears of the Kingdom. This moment in time is shown as completely separate from the founding of Hyrule that comes from earlier in the Zelda timeline, which most likely indicates that there are indeed two versions of Hyrule.

The idea that there are two Hyrules in the Zelda timeline has been proposed by fans ever since Tears of the Kingdom released, and now it seems like the speculation was right. If you’d like to go into even more detail and speculation surrounding this new timeline update from Nintendo, you should check out the video below.
