16 months after its launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 finally received docked VRR support, which is set to do wonders for the performance of the vast majority of games, as developers can now implement 40 FPS modes or even unlocked framerates to deliver great gaming experiences.
According to an early test conducted by Digital Foundry’sJohn Linneman, the current-generation system is on par with the Xbox Series X|S, soundly beating the PlayStation 5, although all currently available games won’t be able to take advantage of VRR.
“Games need to be patched, only Welcome Tour supports it now,” said Linneman on Bluesky, delivering what is definitely the only true bad news for the Nintendo Switch 2’sVRR implementation. “It supports full LFC in 120hz mode. In 60hz mode, it supports between 40-60hz like Xbox which is better than PS5’s 48-60hz support.” With the system’s screen also supporting VRR, the Digital Foundry tech expert believes that “most games should have it going forward.”
Nintendo Switch 2’s docked VRR support also comes with an annoying quirk that, truth be told, shouldn’t impact too many users. “It forces VRR on at all times when enabled in the menu even when the software can’t support it. As a heavy user of black frame insertion, this means you have to go into display settings and disable it most of the time unless the specific game you’re playing needs it.”

As John Linneman mentioned, this addition bodes particularly well for future Nintendo Switch 2 games, as developers are sure to take advantage of VRR in docked mode as many already have in handheld mode. With fast-paced games like the recently announced Metroid Ravenous coming in the next two months, the Nintendo Switch 2 is well-equipped to deliver the best possible experience, no matter how the system is used.
