We live in a world where physical media is becoming less and less prevalent, and that’s especially true for videogames. Gaming started to make a turn towards digital releases roughly 20 years ago, and it’s only been accelerating every year since. Now we’re in an era where digital releases are 100% confirmed and physical options only come about if we’re lucky.
2026 saw the move away from physical really heat up, as companies like Sony have said they’re completely abandoning physical titles by January 2028. This has caused concerned that other major players in the industry would do the same. Thankfully, for the time being, it seems like Nintendo is going to stick to physical and digital releases.
In a chat with Coelho, Bill van Zyll, Vice President and General Manager for Nintendo in Latin America spoke about digital and physical releases. van Zyll didn’t mince words on the topic, saying flat out that Nintendo has no plans to move away from physical releases while also recognizing that gamers like to see titles released that way.
“Historically, we haven’t had a preference for a specific format. We take consumer preferences very much into consideration. We also have a platform that was just launched. We’ve been around for a little over a year with the Nintendo Switch 2 , and it offers both digital and physical games. Therefore, we have no plans to abandon physical media. We know how much fans also enjoy it.”
