Nintendo explains how it prices games, including impact of physical vs. digital

Nintendo has shared some additional information about how it sets the prices of its games, including how the physical-versus-digital distinction factors into its decisions.

Earlier this year, it was announced that first-party games for Nintendo Switch 2 would be cheaper digitally than physically. Right now, titles on the Nintendo eShop are priced $10 lower than their boxed counterparts.

Bill van Zyll, VP and general manager for Nintendo in Latin America, said in an interview with Coelho that “a lot of factors” are involved. He brought up “the value proposition, the hours of play you can expect, the complexity, the costs that went into making the game.”

As for why physical games are priced higher now, it largely comes down to what we already suspected: the rising cost of microchips and cartridges.

The pricing is set based on a lot of factors. Certainly one factor is we look at at the game. We look at the the value proposition, the hours of play you can expect, the complexity, the costs that went into making the game. So there’s a lot of different factors that that certainly go into pricing the game and each game goes through its own individual process and analysis. So it’s already factored into the expectations.

So based on that price, there’s always going to be price elasticity. Certainly, you know, if the price is higher, it may impact numbers and it’s also going to be impacted if the price is lower. But it already goes into the expectations when you’re setting the pricing on what you’re going to sell. Again, as we’ve talked about before, there’s a lot of factors that that impact the price of the game itself, and each case is is individual.

Then you talked about the physical versus the digital. And a second ago we talked about all these different costs including the cost of the microchips, the cost of cartridges, and so and that is a real consideration as well and that impacts the price. So that’s why you’re starting to see a divergence between physical which is more costly besides the distribution cost and everything else if you analyze and you’re good at doing these analyses. But everything that has to happen from the production of all the different things, the the box, the paper, the game cartridge, assembling it, transporting it. Then it has to go through the whole sales channel and its inventory. So that’s working capital.

There’s all these different factors that go into this and you got to recover those costs versus digital. So there’s savings on digital, right? So you can either not pass them on… I mean, how do you make that decision? So considering the costs the increasing costs of game cartridges of chips, you’re starting to see yeah a logical divergence between the the physical item where you’re okay you’re getting something for it. If you want that so you can trade or resell, that’s fine, here it is, we’re offering up that choice. But that but I do think it’s a logical divergence between the pricing of the two.

Zyll also reaffirmed that Nintendo won’t be getting rid of physical games any time soon. We have more on that here.
