Will Ferrell is teeing off and getting teed off

The forecast for Netflix in July is a heat dome of new releases, starting with Will Ferrell’s new comedy The Hawk, in which the Saturday Night Live veteran plays an aging golf pro trying to reignite his career in a last-ditch effort to complete the grand slam. If that sounds a little too city slicker-ish to you, Netflix also has a pair of pastoral programs to get you back in the saddle. Early in the month, a new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie settles in, and at the end of the month, Season 2 of Ransom Canyon debuts.

Enola Holmes 3, starring Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes’ sister, leads the slate of original movies coming to Netflix in the month of July. But don’t count out the plucky Heartstopper Forever, which wraps up the series with a feature-length movie. Licensed highlights include Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, and Wicked: For Good. And on the licensed TV series side, sink your teeth into the complete series of Hannibal or dive into the fourth season of Dark Winds.

Here are the shows and movies coming to Netflix in July — as well as what’s leaving.

Little House on the Prairie Season 1 (July 9)

if you’re searching for a family-friendly series about starvation, pestilence, hostile wildlife, and doing whatever it takes to survive to the next day, look no further than this adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved books. The series follows the Ingalls family as they build a new homestead outside of the town of Independence in the 1800s American West. This updated version will expand the franchise by also telling the story from the perspective of the Indigenous Osage people, whose land the Ingallses try to settle. As Netflix continues to make shows for all audiences, this one has its eyes set on fans of Hallmark Channel and Heartland. [Trailer]

The Hawk Season 1 (July 16)

To you, the person who begged the streaming gods to see Will Ferrell throw a fit in a bunker on a golf course: Your prayers have been answered. Ferrell heads to Netflix as the star of The Hawk, a comedy about former golf pro Lonnie Hawkins (Ferrell) trying to make it back on the tour more than 20 years after his peak to complete the career grand slam. Standing in his way are his golfer son (Jimmy Tatro), ex-wife (Molly Shannon), an old rival (Luke Wilson), and Hawkins’ aging body. [Trailer]

    Heartstopper Forever (July 17)

Netflix’s queer romance drama Heartstopper was supposed to run for four seasons, but declining viewership from Seasons 2 to 3 likely led Netflix to put a pause on a full final season and instead give it a feature film sendoff. Still, it’s better than canceling the series on the third season’s bittersweet cliffhanger, in which Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) contemplated the difficult reality of a long-distance relationship after Nick was preparing to leave for college. In Heartstopper Forever, we’ll see how they struggle as Nick is on his own while Charlie remains at Truham and, hopefully, how they overcome it. [Trailer]

Ransom Canyon Season 2 (July 23)

TV’s top show about yearning returns for more romantic horseback rides in Texas. Following a six-month time jump between seasons, Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) returns home after playing with the New York City Philharmonic and not talking to Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) once. (Let’s take a second to shout out the countrified romance name generator.) That’s gotta change, as showrunner April Blair promises that love is at the forefront of Season 2 after Season 1 was about fending off outside invaders. Patricia Clarkson and Steve Howey join the cast in Season 2, but the show is saying farewell to a few Season 1 regulars: Eoin Macken and Andrew Liner, who played Davis and Reid Collins, respectively, won’t be returning. [Everything we know about Ransom Canyon Season 2]
