Perry became one of television’s most recognisable comedy stars through his role as Chandler Bing in Friends, appearing in all 236 episodes of the sitcom between 1994 and 2004.
The documentary will look beyond his famous character to explore his life away from the screen, including his long struggle with addiction and his efforts to speak openly about the illness and help others facing similar difficulties.
Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, will be one of the central voices in the series.
The production will also feature previously unseen photographs and videos from the Perry family’s private archive, alongside memories from some of his lifelong friends.
Perry Bowick said she wanted viewers to see her brother as a whole person rather than simply as Chandler Bing or someone defined by addiction, and hoped the documentary would offer a deeper understanding of the person behind the public figure.
The series is directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson, who said the project aims to reveal parts of Perry’s story that audiences had not previously known.
It has not yet been confirmed whether any of his Friends co-stars will appear.
Perry died on 28 October 2023 at the age of 54 from an accidental ketamine overdose.
The documentary will arrive on Netflix on 27 October, one day before the third anniversary of his death.
