M3GAN is returning in a new format, giving the killer android another chance to grow beyond the big screen. The upcoming M3GAN spin-off will bring the horror franchise to comics, with stories that may follow Katie as she gets older.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Blumhouse has partnered with IDW Publishing to develop comic books based on several horror properties. The new lineup includes M3GAN, The Purge, and Happy Death Day, under IDW’s horror imprint, IDW Dark.
Editor Heather Antos told the above-mentioned publication that the partnership creates room to explore more stories within these established worlds.
M3GAN could be heading to high school in new comic series
The M3GAN comic could follow Katie into new stages of her life, including high school. Antos explained, “She is Katie’s companion. As Katie continues to get older, M3GAN is going to have to go with her to different things.” She added that this could mean exploring school experiences as Katie grows up.
The editor also shared her personal hope for one possible storyline, “I really want M3GAN at prom.” However, she added that the idea is not confirmed. The comic’s creative team has not been fully announced, and its release date remains unknown.
The announcement follows M3GAN 2.0’s disappointing box office performance. The 2025 sequel earned approximately $39.1 million worldwide, compared with around $181.8 million for the original 2022 film. The new comic series offers Blumhouse another way to expand the franchise beyond theaters.
The project is part of a wider partnership between Blumhouse and IDW Dark. The Purge comic will lead the lineup, with Dan Watters writing and Juan José Ryp providing the artwork. Tim Seeley will write the Happy Death Day comic, while further details about the M3GAN series are still to come.
The partnership also works in both directions, with Blumhouse adapting IDW Dark’s comic The Exorcism at 1600 Penn into a live-action film. This gives the companies opportunities to develop horror stories across different formats. IDW has also published comics based on film franchises such as A Quiet Place and Smile.
