When it comes to what’s trending in movies and TV shows, there always seems to be a clear favorite of the moment. We’ve had the era of psychological thrillers, watched rom-coms make their comeback and now it appears steamy thrillers are having their turn. The latest proof? One just landed the No. 1 spot on Netflix.
Currently topping the charts is Desire (originally titled Deseo), a Mexican psychological thriller and erotic drama that follows Lucero, a successful lawyer trapped in an unhappy marriage. After starting a passionate affair with her daughter’s swimming coach, what begins as an exciting escape quickly turns into something much darker. As his obsession grows, Lucero finds herself caught in a dangerous situation involving manipulation, betrayal and murder.
The premise may feel familiar, especially if you’ve watched movies like Fatal Attraction, Swimfan, the Beyoncé-led Obsessed or the 365 Days trilogy. But Desire adds its own twist to the familiar forbidden romance storyline, delivering a surprise ending that may catch viewers off guard.
Of course, not everyone is sold. The film has sparked mixed reactions from viewers, with some praising the drama and encouraging others to press play, while others feel the story lacks depth and isn’t worth the watch.
Currently, Desire holds a 4.3 out of 10 rating on IMDb, with many viewers giving it five stars or fewer. The film has not yet received an official rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though the early reviews available have been less than enthusiastic.
Still, the numbers don’t lie: Desire is currently Netflix’s No. 1 movie, meaning plenty of people are curious enough to give it a chance.
With viewers so divided, this might be one of those films you’ll have to watch yourself to decide whether it’s a hidden gem or simply the latest viral Netflix obsession.
