Netflix GTA 6 Reveal Streaming Guidelines Confuse Everyone

We’re hours away from an official “extended” look at Grand Theft Auto 6 debuting exclusively on Netflix. It might end up being the single biggest individual gaming news beat of the year, and content creators are eager to be part of the reveal. But the footage won’t go live on YouTube until hours after the Netflix event, and creators went into a panic last night over Rockstar Games’ confusing guidelines for what they are and aren’t allowed to stream from the first new GTA 6 trailer in over a year.

“Once Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuts on Netflix, creators can share their reaction content across social and video platforms,” Rockstar posted on August 26. This left people very confused. Of course, people can share their reactions online. That’s not something anyone needed Rockstar’s permission for. The real question was whether they could share footage from the reveal without getting hit with copyright strikes from the studio or Netflix.

It’s become common in gaming for livestreamed events to be co-streamed by creators so they can react in real time to what’s being shown to their audience. The stream becomes a second feed of the original video, with the person or group also appearing on screen and talking over it. That way, fans can essentially watch the event alongside their favorite creators.

But that would seem to be a big no-no for a seemingly expensive deal between Rockstar and Netflix to give the streamer timed exclusivity over what is effectively GTA 6’s long-awaited trailer 3. “Does this mean we can livestream the Netflix content?” asked streamer Timothy “TimTheTatman” Betar. “Or ONLY our reactions (no gameplay content)?” There was, understandably, a brief freak-out about this, with some people even trying to DM Netflix customer service about the situation and then being told by some poor rep, or potentially an AI bot, that no, they couldn’t stream the GTA 6 reveal until it was on YouTube.

With the online content mill growing restless, Rockstar issued a clarification a few hours later. “Quick clarification: you are free to livestream An Extended Look from 3 p.m. ET on August 27 providing you adhere to platform-specific guidance and you do not simply restream or repost the unedited video in full without context or commentary,” Rockstar wrote. That certainly makes it sound definitive that people can stream the Netflix reveal on their browser and broadcast it to their followers.

That does make you wonder what exactly Netflix is getting out of this. While we don’t know exactly what sort of money is changing hands, you essentially won’t have to log into Netflix to view the reveal thanks to co-streaming. Maybe the streaming giant is simply content to bask in the co-branded cultural limelight of one of the biggest entertainment moments of the year.
