Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner)

Nathan Fillion breaks a new record for DC.

Fillion portrayed Green Lantern Guy Gardner in Superman (2025) and the upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow(2027). It was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con during the panel of the upcoming TV series, Lanterns, that he will reprise his role in the show. Although the appearance was brief and the extent of his role in the comic book adaptation is still under wraps, fans of his iteration of the character are happy nonetheless.

In an interview withScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, the creator ofLanternsand iconic DC Comics writer, Tom King, revealed how the series’ San Diego Comic-Con panel made DC history when it comes to Green Lantern. The creator revealed that Fillion joined Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan) and Aaron Pierre (John Stewart) on stage, marking the first time that three live-action Green Lanterns have ever been in a room together.

King went on to say how excited he was to see the three actors standing side by side. He explained that being a lifelong fan of comic books, especially theGreen Lanternfranchise, it was a great day for him. He added that other avid fans of the comics probably felt the same way he did, and he thanked the “nerd gods” for bringing them together on stage.

Although King is the co-creator of Lanterns and a fan of the franchise, he has not written any Green Lantern comics before. However, he is a well respected figure in the comic book industry. He has written several critically acclaimed series for DC Comics, such as Wonder Woman(2023), where he created Diana Prince’s daughter, Elizabeth Marston Prince (Trinity), and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2022). He has also collaborated with Marvel Comics as well, notably for 2015’s Vision series.

Lanterns is HBO’s upcoming superhero TV series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and King, inspired by DC Comics’ Green Lanternfranchise. The show follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new Lantern John Stewart as they investigate a murder on Earth that is more complicated than they originally believed. The project is produced by DC Studios in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.

Green Lantern is a mantle that has been taken by several superheroes. Thefirst Green Lantern, Alan Scott, was created by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger. He first appeared in All-American Comics #16 in July 1940. However, the character and his many iterations have evolved over the years. Later comics reimagined the Green Lanterns as members of a group rather than just one person. Aside from Guy, Hal, and John, the title has also been held by Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and Sojourner Mullein.

Lanterns will be released on August 16, 2026, on HBO and Max.
