Written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia is one of the most successful Shonen anime and manga series of all time. While the manga reached its conclusion on August 5th, 2024, after 10 years of serialization, the anime followed suit shortly afterward in December 2025. The main story reached a bittersweet conclusion with a brief epilogue focusing on the aftermath of the long and brutal war against All For One and all the villains. However, while the anime received countless praises for the finale, fan reception was completely different during the manga’s serialization. The ending was heavily criticized in 2024, often leading to online debates about Deku’s status as a hero and the pacing, among many other things.

Not only that, but the majority of the complaints were about Deku losing his quirk, One For All. After all, the story was supposed to follow his journey of becoming the world’s greatest hero. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the heat to die down, and the extra chapter made fans forget all the disappointment. By the time the anime finale was released, hardly anyone remembered the initial dissatisfaction as MHA continues to remain in the spotlight with more exciting projects. Regardless, the ending is just as amazing as the entire story, and it’s all thanks to the epilogue.

Regardless of how popular a Shonen series is, they often tend to rush the finale with about one or two chapters that barely give fans a satisfactory conclusion. Compared to that, My Hero Academia stands out as an exception when it dedicated seven chapters to focusing on the aftermath of the war. We also see glimpses of the new hero society created by the heroes who not only participated in the war, but stood their ground until the very end.

The aftermath of the war was brutal, and hero society went through major changes as it rebuilt Japan after all the destruction. Many pro heroes either lost their lives or retired completely by the end of the story, but not before paving the path for the young generation. The epilogue not only focused on the future of the new heroes, but also gave Deku a way to continue chasing his dreams.

The biggest controversy regarding the ending was Deku losing his powers, as many initially believed his journey as a hero was over. However, it was only the beginning of his path toward becoming the world’s greatest hero. Not only is he a teacher at U.A., nurturing the next generation of heroes, but he also received a high-tech suit that allows him to use his former powers despite not having a quirk. He now ranks fourth on the Hero Billboard Chart, proving that he doesn’t need some legendary ability to make it big as a hero.

On top of having special gear built to mimic his powers, he is an excellent strategist and has a better idea of how quirks work. The training he did as All Might’s successor wasn’t in vain, since it shaped him into the hero he is today. Not to mention that his deep understanding of quirks and analyzing their strengths and weaknesses make him a great teacher. The story has shown time and again how important it is to nurture new talents, as hero society is in constant need of brave souls who fight for justice. While the series’ ending may not be perfect, it’s exceptional enough to not leave any loose ends untied.
