The Hope Assembles challenge is off to a strong start, and these are my top picks.
LEGO Ideas’ three Star Wars and Marvel crossover challenges have been underway for a while, and these are my top picks from each contest so far.
The Hope Assembles campaign is one of LEGO Ideas’ biggest groups of challenges to date, mixing two of the biggest franchises in the world just ahead of Star Wars’ 50th anniversary in 2027. The brief is to fuse A New Hope with Marvel Comics across three distinct categories– vehicles, characters, and scenes.
Each challenge has been open for two weeks, and you have until November 12 to enter. Any models that make it to the fan vote stand a chance of becoming an official set, too. I’ve been watching the challenges closely in anticipation of the fan vote, and these are my top two submissions from each category, so far.
Vehicle fusion: Hydra Star Carrier
I have a soft spot for microscale versions of massive vehicles, including the Helicarrier. One of the first submissions I saw for any of the three Hope Assembles challenges was Dark Animal’s Hydra Star Carrier. Suffice it to say that it has quickly become my favourite submission so far.
The fusion of a Star Destroyer and the Helicarrier, as well as Hydra with the Empire, is something I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of. DarkAnimal showcases how perfectly the crossover works, while including two mashup minifigures.
Scene fusion: The Fantastic Four vs Silver Vader
Hachiroku24 has two submissions in two categories so far, but their scene-based project has caught my eye. The Fantastic Four vs Silver Vader is inspired by the cover of Fantastic Four #49, featuring the Fantastic Four fleeing from a crossover between the Silver Surfer and Darth Vader. Whether that implies that Galactus is the Death Star, or the Emperor, or both, is unclear.
It’s a gorgeous build that would present the LEGO Group with a chance to create comic-inspired Fantastic Four minifigures, and features clear ties to both Star Wars and Marvel.
Character fusion: Darth Doom
One of the most common character crossovers in the campaign so far has been Darth Vader and Doctor Doom. ObscureLampmakes it easy to see why so many LEGO Ideas users have latched onto this fusion specifically. Their character model features a detailed depiction of Darth Doom complete with the cloak, standing atop the broken icons of Marvel heroes.
76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors’ Edition and 75455 Boba Fett demonstrate how well buildable character display sets work, and the Star Wars and Marvel crossover is certainly worthy of such a build.
Vehicle fusion: The Guardian of Hope – Milano X Falcon
I was hoping and remain unsurprised to see multiple mashups of the Milano and the Millennium Falcon across the vehicle portion of the Hope Assembles campaign. The nature of the ships and their crews is practically made to be mixed up, and AboveBricks180‘s crossover creation does a great job of maintaining key aspects of the designs from each ship.
The proposed minifigures are also a major driving factor of my desire for this build to become a real set. It suggests a crossover of Han and Star-Lord, Gamora and Leia, Chewbacca and Groot, Rocket and R2-D2. The best of the bunch has to be the fusion of Drax and C-3PO, though.
These two characters may be the opposites of one another, but there’s something about a tattooed protocol droid that I need immediately.
Scene fusion: That’s No Moon…
That’s No Moon… by BrickBrickGrayBrick grabbed my attention as soon as we saw it, but I’m admittedly somewhat biased. The 931-piece cockpit recreation includes minifigures mixing the A New Hope crew with the Guardians of the Galaxy, all of which work amazingly.
The background of the scene also features a crossover between Ego the Living Planet and the Death Star, which I suggestedin a feature at the start of the challenge. It’s good to see that my ramblings aren’t entirely nonsense, as the mashup works wonders.
Character fusion: SPIDER-D2
Also within my suggestion feature for the campaign was a mix of H.E.R.B.I.E. and R2-D2, but PBA Art has submitted something far better. They’ve crossed R2-D2 with Spider-Man, capitalising on the spunky personality of both characters.
The red and blue astromech droid has swapped treads for four legs and comes equipped with a web shooter. It’s also a lower-piece submission, which would be good to have in the mix of any eventual LEGO Star Wars x Marvel crossover sets.
