Netflix’s upcoming period drama My Brilliant Career adapts the seminal novel by Miles Franklin, taking viewers back to Australia in the year 1900, where a spirited young woman, Sybylla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast), disobeys societal norms, refusing marriage proposals from suitors, all in an effort to focus entirely on writing her novel.

If you take a slice of Little Women, a dash of Jane Austen, a bit of Bridgerton, and set the story in Australia in the early 1900s, then you land at Miles Franklin’s My Brilliant Career. Fun, witty, and packed with romantic drama, the 6-part Netflix adaptation chronicles the journey of a spirited, independent young woman Sybylla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast), whose fierce ambition to become a great writer clashes badly with a duty to follow societal norms and marry the perfect suitor — especially when her family’s finances are reliant on her.
To find a husband, Sybylla is forced to move in with her grandmother.She navigates the task with a most uncouth attitude, simply abiding to gather valuable experiences for her novel. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she falls inexplicably in love with the wealthy Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung), the owner of Five Bob Downs.
Netflix’s My Brilliant Career is adapted for television by Liz Doran. This isn’t the first time that the novel has seen a big adaptation, with the first being the movie My Brilliant Career (1979) starring Judy Davis and the late, great Sam Neill. Headlining the new adaptation as the indefatigable Sybylla Melvyn is Philippa Northeast, an Australian actress best known for her recurring role as Evelyn MacGuire in soap opera Home and Away. This series marks her second Netflix project, the first being Territory (2024), where she had a minor role.
All things considered, My Brilliant Career is Philippa Northeast’s biggest role to date — and it’s a story she’s been familiar with from childhood. “I was very familiar with the book growing up… my Mum, Polly, had read it to me because to her, Sybylla and the story of My Brilliant Career was a really wonderful escape for her when she was younger,” the actress told Netflix. “She saw herself in Sybylla and it meant so much for her to share it with me. I’d always locked it away as a story that I had heard from Mum – but it’s not until now have I realised its absolute importance as part of my formative years.”
The Netflix series is far from a one-to-one adaptation of the original novel from Miles Franklin, but Northeast believes that the TV series is an excellent companion. “Miles Franklin did such an amazing job of bringing this character to life in the book and now Liz Doran has done the same in this new iteration,” she said, adding that she did extensive research into the novel to make her performance as authentic as possible. “Before filming, I spent hours in the State Library of NSW going through the journals of Miles Franklin, whose estate donated her materials to the Library. I read all the journal entries, postcards, diaries, looked at her artifacts. I thought if I can get my eyes and hands on anything that inspired Miles I’ll get to know Sybylla. I wanted to go a deep dive and fortunately had so much access to all this inspiration at the Library. I also read Miles Franklin biographies from Kerrie Davies and Jill Roe, both brilliant books which helped me inform who Miles was. There’s a lot of women in Australia and beyond that see themselves in Sybylla and recognize her spirit and fire, it was important that I honoured that and hope to give a new generation a Sybylla they can see themselves in.”

Throughout the series, Sybylla meets an array of potential suitors both good and bad, but there are two men who won’t leave her side: Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung) and Frank Hawden (Jake Dunn). One a young bachelor who owns the large Five-Bob Downs farm near Caddagat, the other a British man sent to find a wife in order to secure his inheritance. Suffice it to say, they both cause a headache for Sybylla in different ways. “The way that Christopher Chung (Harry) and Jake Dunn (Frank) interrogated the story and understood the function of the love story within this self-love story was so beautiful,” Northeast said of their performances. “They both offered different versions of love to Sybylla and from those versions of love, she has ultimately learned to love herself.”
For Philippa Northeast, playing Sybylla represents so much more than any other character. “There’s progression, but we are still seeing the reversal of women’s rights around the world today,” she explains. “The questions Sybylla wrestles with, such as partnership, career, family, independence are ones young women are still navigating daily. What makes Sybylla radical, even now, is the boldness of her choice. At a time when women couldn’t vote and marriage was the only socially acceptable path, she chose herself. I couldn’t think of a braver way to live your life, to be absolutely fearless, determined and to live life on your own terms.”
Showrunner Liz Doran and director Allyssa McClelland tease My Brilliant Career
My Brilliant Career is one of the defining pieces of Australian literature from the early 20th century. It’s a story that has touched so many, and not seen any big adaptations since 1979. The prospect of bringing the story back for modern audiences was a big responsibility. “We can’t wait to share this story with a big heart to the world,” director Allyssa McClelland explains. “It’s important, especially for women, to constantly reflect on how far we’ve come and how far we’ve still got to go. I think the story is really seminal, as seminal as it was at the turn of the century. It’s still a really important part of Australian history and women’s history in Australia.”
They’ve brought back Sybylla Melvyn with style. “What excites me most is introducing Sybylla Melvyn to a whole new generation and hoping it has the same impact on them that it had on me as a 14-year-old,” McClelland added. “She is completely unpersuaded by anyone or anything else in order to pursue that dream. I just think that’s such a beautiful message to be able to celebrate and reveal to a whole new generation of audiences.”
For showrunner Liz Doran, the story is about passion, independence, and ardently following your dreams. “Sybylla doesn’t know if her career is going to be brilliant or not. She just knows that she has this fire inside of her that has to be answered and if she doesn’t honour that, then she will have lost something in her own life,” she explains. “You don’t know where they’re going to lead, but what choice do you have beyond just following your dreams?”
