‘Mr. Terrific’ Series in Active Development at DC Studios

Edi Gathegi’s fan-favorite turn as Mr. Terrific in James Gunn’s Superman may be getting its own solo chapter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Mr. Terrific series is in active development at DC Studios, with veteran writer Allan Heinberg attached to pen the pilot

Heinberg brings serious superhero credentials to the project. He wrote the screenplay for the 2017 Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot, co-created Marvel’s Young Avengers with artist Jim Cheung, and most recently served as executive producer and writer on Netflix’s The Sandman. His television resume also includes Grey’s Anatomy, The OC, Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls

The character has deep roots in DC <a href="https://comicvibe.com/why-kosa-matters-for-the-comics-industry/” title=”Why KOSA Matters for the Comics Industry”>Comics history. The original Mr. Terrific, Terry Sloane, was created by Charles Reizenstein and Hal Sharp and debuted in 1942’s Sensation Comics #1 as a wealthy, gifted man with a photographic memory who fought criminals with nothing more than his multitude of talents and a keen sense of fair play. A reserve member of the Justice Society of America, Sloane was eventually killed by his old enemy the Spirit King. His successor, Michael Holt, was introduced in 1997’s Spectre #54 by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake. Holt was a brilliant scientist who was nearly driven to suicide by the death of his wife and unborn child before being inspired to take up heroics. Armed with advanced technology including his signature T-Spheres, Holt is widely regarded as the third smartest person in the DC Universe.

Gathegi first brought Holt to life in James Gunn’s Superman, which opened in 2025 to strong critical and commercial reception and was widely regarded as a confident relaunch of the DC Universe. His portrayal of Mr. Terrific was among the film’s most praised elements, with audiences responding warmly to the character’s sharp wit and moral clarity. As part of the Justice Gang alongside Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific was the only member who took Lex Luthor’s threat seriously, ultimately helping Lois Lane rescue Superman from an interdimensional prison. Gathegi is set to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow, and while nothing has been officially confirmed, there is a strong likelihood he would return for the series as well. Gathegi previously played Darwin in X-Men: First Class, the 2011 Marvel film that rebooted that franchise, making him one of the few actors to have played significant roles in both major comic book universes.

The series remains in early development with no platform, episode count or release window yet announced. Mr. Terrific is not the only Superman supporting player being developed for his own project. Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen is also set to headline DC Crime, a comedy series pairing the reporter with the DCU’s deadliest villains, with the first season expected to feature Gorilla Grodd
