Spider-Man is getting another live-action series, and this one is heading into one of the strangest corners of the character’s history.
Amazon is developing a new Spider-Man series for Prime Video based on Marvel’s infamous Clone Saga, Deadline reports. The project will bring characters including Ben Reilly and Kaine into a live-action adaptation of one of the most complicated storylines in Spider-Man comics.
The announcement comes at a particularly busy time for the wall-crawler, with Sony also preparing another theatrical release for the character. But this new series is taking its inspiration from a very different era of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man’s Clone Saga Is Coming to Prime Video
The Clone Saga is one of the most recognizable — and divisive — storylines in Spider-Man history.
At the center of the story is the revelation that Peter Parker may not actually be the only Spider-Man. Ben Reilly, a clone of Peter, eventually takes on the Spider-Man identity, while Kaine becomes another major figure in the storyline.
The comic storyline became notoriously complicated as it expanded across multiple Spider-Man titles in the 1990s. What began as a relatively straightforward mystery surrounding Peter Parker’s identity eventually grew into a sprawling story involving clones, alternate identities, and competing claims over who was the real Spider-Man.
The biggest curiosity surrounding the series is its potential focus on characters who have never had major live-action roles.
Ben Reilly is one of the most important characters to emerge from the Clone Saga. Created as a clone of Peter Parker, Ben eventually adopts the Spider-Man name and becomes the Scarlet Spider before taking on the mantle himself.
Kaine is another clone of Peter, but his relationship with the original Spider-Man is considerably more complicated. The character has operated as an antihero and has taken on the identity of the Scarlet Spider in the comics.
That gives the Prime Video project a chance to tell a Spider-Man story without simply retelling Peter Parker’s familiar origin.
The Series Comes as Spider-Man Is Everywhere Again
The timing is interesting for Sony’s Spider-Man franchise.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has brought Peter Parker back to theaters, continuing the story following Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie also features Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink.
The Prime Video project appears to be taking a separate path, drawing from the comics rather than simply extending Holland’s version of Peter Parker.
That means Spider-Man fans could soon have multiple versions of the character appearing across different formats, with the Prime Video series opening the door to characters who have largely remained on the comic-book page.
Prime Video has not yet announced a release date for the series or revealed its cast. But with Amazon and Sony now developing a live-action Spider-Man project around the Clone Saga, one of the most unusual chapters in the character’s comic-book history is officially heading for the screen.
