A new facility at Montclair State University will offer digitally and sensorially enhanced virtual reality systems to push the limits of how students experience learning in the classroom.
The university also plans to use its ret in immersive technologies, it announced on Tuesday, Sept. 1
The premise is to use technology that creates cinematic storytelling experiences grounded in effective teaching methodology and practices from the university’s collaborator on the project, Dreamscape Learn.
“Our students will graduate knowing how to storyboard, design, code and run virtual, preparing them for vibrant careers in our tech-driven economy,” said Keith Strudler, dean of MSU’s College of Communication and Media.

The technologies “transport students into cinematic worlds where they become scientists, explorers, and investigators” that permit them to become part of the story and more invested in their own learning, says Dreamscape Learn’s website.
The company has partnered with Arizona State University and Rowan University. Montclair is only the seventh university to offer such a facility, it said in a statement.
The 26-seat, 2,450-square-foot Dreamscape Learn lab is in Montclair’s College of Communication and Media building.
Partial funding for the center came from the New Jersey Film Works Grant Program at the state Economic Development Authority, the university said.
The virtual reality equipment will use “360-degree motion-capture technology and highly advanced haptics — physical stimuli involving vibrations and other motions to simulate touch,” making for hyper-real experiential learning, the university said.
The lab will also feature courses created by the company, including a biology course that sends students into a simulated alien world to collect samples and conduct research using virtual reality.
