The Steam Deck modding scene keeps finding new ways to surprise us. A Reddit user going by PhyFawkes has apparently pulled the internals out of a Steam Deck and rebuilt them inside a shell roughly the size of an original Game Boy. It looks a bit chonky, and it also looks like it mostly works, which is honestly the fun part of these community builds.
Called the SteamBoy, the build reuses genuine LCD Steam Deck parts, including the motherboard, battery, speakers, and button hardware, all squeezed into a smaller vertical chassis. Because the new shell is so much tighter than Valve’s own design, the cooling fan had to shrink down too, and a different display panel was fitted in place of the stock screen. It’s a neat bit of engineering just to get everything to physically fit together in the first place.
That screen seems to be the current holdup, however. Early coverage of the project suggests the display doesn’t actually function yet. The builder reportedly thinks a custom adapter and some BIOS tweaks will be needed before the system properly recognizes the panel. So for now, this is very much a proof of concept rather than a finished handheld, but there’s a demo video floating around showing it running output through a TV instead of its own screen.
This isn’t the first time someone has taken a screwdriver to Valve’s handheld, either. We’ve seen modders cram a 61TB SSD into a Deck, and others swap in 32GB of RAM through some careful soldering work.
There’s also been at least one attempt going the other direction, turning a Nintendo Switch into something that plays more like a Steam Deck. Valve’s own designers have had to step in and warn against certain SSD swaps too, since everything inside the Deck is packed in so tightly that small changes can mess with heat dissipation.
The SteamBoy is another step in the direction of enthusiasts pushing Steam Deck hardware well outside its intended form factor, and it’s probably worth staying a little cautious here. Cramming full Steam Deck internals into a case this small raises real questions about cooling and battery life, especially once it needs to handle something more demanding than sitting on a menu screen.

Once PhyFawkes manages to get that display working, it would be very interesting to see the finished product. Still, for a project built mostly out of curiosity, getting a Steam Deck to boot inside a Game Boy shell at all is a pretty solid achievement, even in its current unfinished state.
