Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 Audio Bug That Caused Games And Applications To Crash With October Update

The KB5127648 update addresses Dolby Digital AC-3 decoding crashes across Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.

Microsoft has finally resolved a rather frustrating Windows 11 audio bug that caused certain games and applications to crash unexpectedly, sometimes preventing them from launching altogether. The issue, which was introduced with September’s optional preview update, has now been addressed through the October 2026 cumulative update KB5127648.

As the problem originated with update KB5124010, released on September 22, and affected Windows 11’s built-in Dolby Digital AC-3 audio decoding functionality. Applications relying on this component could unexpectedly terminate when attempting to play audio, adjust volume, or use certain audio-related features

In more severe cases, affected games and applications would fail to launch entirely. The issue was not limited to gaming, either, as media players and certain productivity applications could also encounter similar crashes.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem earlier this month, explaining that the crashes primarily affected older software relying on the operating system’s built-in AC-3 decoder rather than applications incorporating their own audio decoding solutions.

In some cases the application can fail to launch, or close without warning. In other cases the application will work normally until certain features are used, such as playing music.

Fortunately, most modern games and applications were unlikely to encounter the issue, as many employ their own audio decoding components instead of relying on Windows’ legacy implementation.

The image displays the Dolby Digital AC-3 logo against a background of sound waves and circuit-like patterns.
Dolby Digital AC-3 is a widely used audio codec that has played an important role in gaming, movies, and multimedia playback for decades. Microsoft’s fix restores compatibility for affected Windows 11 users, ensuring that games and applications relying on the codec can function properly without unexpected crashes.

The good news is that Microsoft has officially marked the problem as resolved with KB5127648, released on October 13 as part of the company’s monthly Patch Tuesday rollout. The fix applies to all three affected Windows 11 releases:

    • Windows 11 24H2: OS Build 26100.9711
    • Windows 11 25H2: OS Build 26200.9711
    • Windows 11 26H2: OS Build 26300.9711

The update also addresses several other Windows 11 issues, including mouse input stuttering in certain games and an Explorer-related problem that could cause black screens after signing in, particularly in multi-user and virtual desktop environments.

However, the October update isn’t entirely without problems of its own. Microsoft has acknowledged a separate issue affecting Smart App Control, where some users who previously disabled the security feature may find themselves unable to reactivate it through Windows Security. Systems where the feature was already enabled remain unaffected.

It’s also worth distinguishing this AC-3 decoding problem from a separate Windows audio bug affecting certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, which can result in missing audio output, unresponsive volume controls, and device initialization errors. That issue has only been partially resolved, with Microsoft continuing to work on the remaining symptoms.

For users who have experienced crashes in games or applications following September’s Windows updates, installing KB5127648 or a newer cumulative update should resolve the AC-3-related problem. The update can be obtained through Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.

Microsoft’s complete changelog and installation information can be found on its official KB5127648 support page.
