Sarah Hardwig’s inspiring story and powerful voice won the blind musician a standing ovation on “America’s Got Talent” and gushing praise from the show’s judges.
“Everything you did was amazing…” judge Sofía Vergara told Hardwig. “Your voice, the song — I think we all fell in love with you, and everybody else is gonna fall in love with you.”
After scoring four “yeses” from the judges during her July 21 audition, Hardwig returns to the NBC talent show July 28 to see if she’ll move on to the live episodes. Those start Aug. 18.
The Naples native has become a breakout star on the show, including a write-up in national entertainment news site Billboard.
Here’s what you need to know about the 23-year-old country singer-songwriter, who grew up performing in Southwest Florida and now pursues her music career in Nashville.
Sarah Hardwig’s inspiring ‘America’s Got Talent’ audition
Hardwig was worried about hitting the high note while singing and playing guitar on the Lainey Wilson hit “Heart Like a Truck.” But she nailed her “America’s Got Talent” audition, no problem.
And the judges and audience absolutely loved her and her inspiring story. The 2021 Naples High graduate was born blind due to a genetic eye condition, she told them.
Her father, Greg Hardwig — a former sports editor and reporter for The Naples Daily News — led Sarah to the microphone onstage so she could sing and play guitar for the judges.
“Music has always played an important role in my life,” she said before her performance. “And I want to prove to the world that — regardless of whether you have a disability or not — you can do absolutely anything that you set your mind to.”
Mission accomplished. The audience cheered enthusiastically and jumped to their feet for a standing ovation. And the judges had mostly glowing praise for Hardwig.
“How did that feel?” judge Simon Cowell asked her afterward.
“Amazing,” she whispered through tears, overcome with emotion.
Judge Howie Mandel said he loved Hardwig’s message and energy.
“That was beautiful and heartwarming and you are the epitome of resilience to show up here and to sing your heart out and to move three or four thousand strangers in this room — and hopefully millions of people at home…” he said. “This show is about inspiration, and you’re inspiring.”
Spice Girl Mel B offered some criticism and said she wanted Hardwig to go “even bigger” on her next song. But she was impressed by Hardwig’s pipes. “You’ve got a really good voice, young lady,” she said. “Your trills and the way you control your voice is on-point.”
Cowell called her performance a great first introduction to the show’s millions of viewers. “That was a really, really good audition,” he said. “I really hope this boosts your confidence, because you really, really have a natural gift.”
A lifetime of making music in Naples and Nashville
Sarah Hardwig might be hitting the national stage for the first time, but she was already a familiar face in Southwest Florida. Until she moved to Nashville in 2021, she’d been singing in Naples and Fort Myers since she was a little girl.
“There’s been a lot of work that she’s done for a really long time to get to this moment,” says Greg Hardwig, who’s also his daughter’s manager (or, as he jokingly calls it, her “dad-ager”).
Sarah Hardwig says she’s known music would be her “thing” since she was 5 years old, when she sang the children’s song “One Small Voice” for her kindergarten graduation. But her love of music is even older than that.
“I knew music was my calling when I was around three or four years old,” she says. “My mom and dad would always tell me that I would always stand in front of the TV and listen to music playing from the TV. A lot of times it was the Drum Corps International Championships, for whatever reason.”
She went on to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at baseball games with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. She also performed at Lee County’s annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest and as part of children’s vocal ensembles for Opera Naples and The Naples Philharmonic.
She graduated from Nashville’s Belmont University last year with a degree in songwriting. Now she’s working on her music career, recording music and performing at popular Nashville venues like The Bluebird Cafe, the Tin Roof and the Listening Room Cafe.
“I play songwriter rounds,” she says. “I write songs and all that stuff. I’m trying to make music my career.”

At 5 months old, Hardwig was diagnosed with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, a condition that left her visually impaired.
“I guess there were a couple months before I was diagnosed where it was presumed that I could see stuff because I used to grab at things,” she says. “And I used to track my mom. I used to kind of track her movement with my eyes. And it started when my mom noticed that I was not tracking her anymore.”
Now she’s almost completely blind.
“I cannot see any shapes, shadows, colors, large print,” she says. “I cannot see any of that. The only thing I have is light perception, and that is it.”
Hardwig says she’d never let her disability hold her back, though.
She won the Tennessee Songwriters Showcase in 2023 and later that year won the Daniel’s Music Foundation’s Danny Award for musicians with disabilities. Then she made her debut at The Grand Ole Opry in 2024.
The country singer-songwriter plans to release several new singles this August, she says. Those will eventually be gathered in an EP.
Hardwig hopes her “America’s Got Talent” appearance leads to bigger things, but she says she’ll pursue her music career no matter what happens.
“It would be cool if I get opportunities from this,” she says. “If something happens, cool. If something doesn’t, you move on, you know what I mean?”
Sarah Hardwig’s viral TikTok videos
Hardwig was invited to audition on “America’s Got Talent” after a TikTok video of her singing Heart’s “Alone” at a Nashville karaoke spot went viral about a year ago, her father says. The video now has 3.7 million views.
People started tagging “The Voice,” “American Idol” and even the Super Bowl in the comments. “America’s Got Talent” eventually emailed and invited her first to perform at a showcase in Nashville in January 2026, then to audition in Los Angeles in March 2026 (when this month’s episodes were recorded).
That Heart song wasn’t Hardwig’s only viral moment, either. A YouTube video of her singing with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler racked up 31,000 views in 2016.
They’d just watched Tyler perform at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and waited outside for 2½ hours near his Rolls-Royce to meet him, her father says. That led to Tyler joining Hardwig on an impromptu duet of country classic “Stand By Your Man.”
“That was CRAZY,” Hardwig says. “I was elated.”
How to watch ‘America’s Got Talent’
“America’s Got Talent” airs at 8 p.m. Tuesdays on NBC. It streams the following day on Peacock.
The show moves to two episodes a week starting Aug. 18 with live episodes, according to NBC’s website.
This season’s judges are Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel and Mel B.
