Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrives in theaters this week. It’s also coming to Fortnite. Epic Games announced that Trojan War hero Odysseus will appear in the battle royale alongside the theatrical release. And unlike IMAX tickets, which are already impossible to get, you can buy as many cartoon sad dads in ancient Greek armor as your heart needs
A teaser for the Odyssey x Fornite crossover went live on July 15. It consists of scenes from the movie remade inFortnite. Odysseus leads his men ashore. Odysseus looks out into a dark cave with a cyclops inside. Odysseus takes the city of Troy thanks to his clever horse trick. It’s unclear if any of this will actually be appearing in the game itself, but early leaks suggest players will at least get to appear as Odysseus when doing the normal Fortnite stuff. And not just any version of Odysseus, but specifically Matt Damon’s version. So it’s really more accurate to say that Matt Damon is joining Fortnite.

While Matt Damon’s war-wearied likeness will be monetized, players who want to don it ahead of everyone else can do so by competing in anOdyssey-themed Fortnite Cup. “The cup of the legendary hero of the Trojan War!” reads the description. “Top competitors will win early access to Odyssey cosmetic rewards before they hit the shop. Good luck and have fun!” The first one goes live at 7:00 p.m. ET tonight
It’s really cool that the 3,000-year-old foundation of the Western canon has finally been recognized in the game where teenagers drop the Griddy after shooting each other in the head as Pickle Rick. It’s what Homer, if he existed, would definitely have wanted. The Ancients could never have imagined how far philosophy, aesthetics, and virtue would progress in the centuries since their civilizations fell. But at least you can taunt your Fortnite friends as Matt Damon, now. Better than having to see his face plastered across all of those new copies of The Odyssey getting re-issued at Barnes and Noble this week.
