Toxic Crusaders comic book — Posted with the permission of Ahoy Comics
Cartoonist Matt Bors has teamed with artist Tristan Wright to create a new comic book version of the early 90s TV kids’ cartoon series “The Toxic Crusaders.” While the cartoon series was edgy for a children’s TV show, this new comic book version is for adults and is more explicitly political, with its gross-out humor serving critiques of capitalism, environmental malfeasance, and crimes against humanity.
Bors writes the comic, expanding on his successful Toxic Avenger series for Ahoy Comics, and newcomer Wright does an amazing job with intricate, appealing artwork.
“Four years ago I bookmarked a tweet by an artist who came across my feed — Tristan Wright, who I had never seen before — and spent half an hour digging into his work. His output was mostly self-published and small press work he wrote, drew, and lettered, and after reading his comic “Late Night Special” I made a mental note to approach him someday for a collaboration.
Earlier this year, the opportunity presented itself when my plans to expand The Toxic Avenger were greenlit by Ahoy after the success of the first volume. We were kicking off the new ongoing series with a number of guests artists working on genre-specific issues and launching a Toxic Crusaders spin-off series. I wrote Tristan to see if he’d be interested in drawing for an issue. He ended up signing on for six.”
The Toxic Crusaders are a team of heroes, including the leader The Toxic Avenger (from the Troma Entertainment film franchise of the 1980s) who have been hideously mutated by exposure to toxic waste. In the first issue, they are up against Apoc Chem, a company owned by aliens determined to rid the planet of oxygen, who have assembled a team of human mutants to serve their purposes.
Bors is a fantastic political cartoonist, so while the action and humor are great, the satire is also sharp and scathing.
The Toxic Crusaders is a five-issue series from Ahoy Comics. The first issue was released this month, and #2 is coming out October 15.
