News broke this week that surprised Marvel and Star Wars fans across the world: The Marvel universe and A Galaxy Far, Far Away are crossing over with each other. This crossover is occurring on the pages of the comics and not the big screen, even though both Star Wars and Marvel are owned by Disney. Consisting of five issues, the crossover event is called Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles.

This crossover event kicks-off in January 2027, as the Star Wars franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary. What makes it special is that Marvel and Star Wars are connected even before this crossover. That’s because Marvel published the very first issue of the Star Wars comic in April 1977, i.e., a month before Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope‘s theatrical release.

What do we know about the Marvel and Star Wars crossover event?

As of now, we don’t know much about Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, except for it being a crossover between the two universes. The heroes of the Marvel Universe will ally with Luke Skywalker and the rest of the resistance, while the villains join the villains. The different covers of the crossover event confirm the involvement of heroes like Wolverine, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, and others.

On the villains’ side, Doctor Doom, Ultron, and Thanos are allied with the Empire. This is ironic because Doctor Doom’s armor may have been a major influence for Darth Vader’s design back in the 1977 movie. Thus, Doom and Vader sharing panels together in the Marvel and Star Wars crossover comic will be interesting for everyone.

Who are the creators involved in the Marvel and Star Wars crossover event?

It will be written by nerd icon Kevin Smith, and popular Marvel artist David Marquez will draw the hyped-up crossover event. The creative director of Lucasfilm’s publishing arm said:

“On April 12th, 1977, Marvel Comics introduced readers to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars #1. Now, 50 years later, it’s only fitting that the Star Wars galaxy collides with the Marvel Universe to celebrate the 50th anniversary of A New Hope. With Hope Assembles, Kevin Smith has written a true love letter to Star Wars, to Marvel, and to comics in general. And combined with David Marquez’s incredible art, we’ll see the heroes and villains of Star Wars team-up and battle with the heroes and villains of Earth-616.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Wacker, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief, pointed out that the two iconic franchises have been interlinked for five decades:

“Marvel and Star Wars’ histories have been intertwined for 50 years and continue to set the standard for storytelling across the world… and across the media landscape. Lifelong lovers of both Star Wars and Marvel have a lot to look forward to as we finally bring the characters together in ways fans have been dreaming about for decades!”

Kevin Smith, on the other hand, celebrated this announcement as the geek icon revealed that he always imagined what it would be like to cross the Star Wars and Marvel universes over with each other. Smith ultimately thanked Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics for this opportunity.

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles hits the comic book stores in January 2027.
