The franchise follows Riko, an orphan who dreams of becoming a legendary Cave Raider like her missing mother. Her life changes when she discovers Reg, a mysterious boy with a mechanical body, in the enormous chasm known as the Abyss. The pair descend into its depths in search of Riko’s mother, encountering strange creatures, ancient relics, and dangers that become increasingly severe the deeper they travel.
The Abyss is central to the series’ premise. Although it contains valuable artefacts and traces of lost civilisations, returning from its depths can inflict a mysterious curse, making every expedition dangerous.
Akihito Tsukushi writes and illustrates the original manga, which began publication online in 2012. Kinema Citrus produced the first television season, which aired in 2017, followed by the feature film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020. A second television season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, aired in 2022.
