Konami Cross Media NY Partners with Mad Cave Studios to Bring “Contra” to Comic Books

    15-07-2026
The legendary run-and-gun arcade franchise is set to make its comic book debut in January 2027 with a 12-issue series, trade paperbacks, and a Deluxe Edition.

Konami Cross Media NY, Inc. has officially signed a landmark licensing agreement with independent publisher Mad Cave Studios to adapt KONAMI’s iconic action video game franchise, Contra, into an expansive comic book series.

The partnership aims to translate the high-octane, sci-fi action of the beloved video game series into a rich, character-driven print narrative. The rollout will feature:

    Multiple trade paperback volumes

    A premium, prestigious Deluxe Edition

The licensing agreement spans major global markets, securing distribution across the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

    Expanding the Contra Universe

Originally launched in arcades in 1987, Contra became a cornerstone of gaming history, famous for its intense difficulty, co-op gameplay, and alien-invasion storyline. This new comic venture seeks to honor that legacy while adding narrative depth to the franchise.

Jennifer Coleman, Senior Vice President of Licensing and Marketing at Konami Cross Media NY, expressed high expectations for the collaboration:

‘The adrenaline-pumping world of Contrahas always been rooted in rich, character-driven action, making it a perfect candidate for the comic book medium. Mad Cave Studios has a proven pedigree for delivering high-impact narratives across a diverse range of genres. We are thrilled to partner with a publisher that shares our passion for the IP and has the creative vision to expand the Contra universe for both long-time fans and new readers’.

Bringing the Action to the Page

Miami-based Mad Cave Studios, established in 2014, has built a reputation as a dynamic force in independent publishing. With a diverse portfolio that includes imprints like Maverick, Nakama Press, and Papercutz, the studio is well-equipped to handle the gritty aesthetic of the Contra brand.

Mark London, CEO and Chief Creative Officer at Mad Cave Studios, shared his excitement about taking on the legendary property:

‘Contra is a cornerstone of gaming history, and we are honored to take the mantle of bringing its explosive energy to the page. Our team is dedicated to cultivating an impactful, character-focused story that honors theom a sci-fi action comic. We can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been building’

Acting for a living can take you down some peculiar avenues. Consider Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg. In the 2010s, they lent their voices to the “Rio” movies as an oil and water pair of blue Spix’s macaws who fall in love. But a decade before becoming animated amorous at-lived dramedy series “Get Real.”
