NEW DELHI: Japanese publishing major Kodansha has officially launched Kodansha India with a celebration event in Delhi, marking the company’s entry into the country with a local publishing subsidiary.
The new company is a joint venture between Kodansha, Dai Nippon Printing and IJ Kakehashi Services.
Kodansha said this is the first time a comprehensive Japanese publisher has established a local subsidiary in India to bring printed books and manga directly to readers in the country.
The launch event brought together partners and stakeholders from the publishing and wider business ecosystem, with Kodansha describing the occasion as the beginning of its India journey.
The publisher said Kodansha India will focus on bringing its stories and content to Indian readers, with manga expected to be a key part of its offering.
For Indian fans waiting for the publisher’s local line-up, the first titles are expected to be announced by early October. Kodansha has not yet disclosed the complete list of books and manga that will be released in India.
The launch comes as Japanese manga and broader Asian pop culture continue to build a growing audience among Indian readers. By setting up a local subsidiary, Kodansha is looking to bring its catalogue closer to that audience while developing a more direct presence in the Indian market.
The company said it looks forward to delivering stories and inspiration to readers across India, while thanking local fans for their patience and continued support.
With the India operation now officially in place, the focus shifts to the October announcement, when readers will get their first look at the Kodansha titles headed to the Indian market.
