Settlement Resolves Two-Year Legal Battle Over Personal PropertyHave you ever had a family fight over shared belongings or money?
Kyle Jacobs’ Death and Its Impact on Family Relationships

Kellie Pickler and the parents of her late husband, songwriter Kyle Jacobs, filed settlement paperwork on Monday, November 2. Their fight over his belongings had run for more than two years. Us Weekly confirmed the filing through online court records. People was first to report it.

Pickler, 40, reached an undisclosed settlement with Reed and Sharon Jacobs. The terms are confidential.

According to court documents obtained by People on November 4, the two sides have fully resolved every claim and dispute between them. Us Weekly reported that the motion says both parties are “satisfied with the distribution of assets” and with the current state of the estate.

Us Weekly reached out to representatives for both sides. Neither has commented publicly.

Reed and Sharon Jacobs are coadministrators of their son’s estate. That detail sat at the center of the whole dispute. His parents controlled the estate on paper. Pickler lived in the house where his things were.

Kyle’s parents went after specific items. Their subpoena, obtained by InTouch, listed a Japanese samurai sword, a Rolex, a Garmin watch, baseball card albums, school awards, seven pistols, a work laptop and his iPhone. Musical instruments and jewelry were on the list too, according to E! Online.

Pickler took legal action against them in 2024. Her petition, obtained by Us Weekly, said the Jacobses had drawn up a list of assets and demanded she hand them over. Her lawyers argued that ownership of some of those items was in dispute.

Pickler also accused her in-laws of taking items from her home after his death without permission. She asked the court to order them to identify what they had removed.

Reed and Sharon denied it. Their November 2024 filing said they entered the home at the express invitation of Pickler and her lawyer. Both had met with them to discuss transferring estate items. Reed and Sharon asked the court to dismiss her lawsuit

Kyle Jacobs’ Death and Its Impact on Family Relationships

Jacobs, a songwriter who worked with Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw, was found dead by police in the Nashville home he shared with Pickler in February 2023. A May 2023 medical examiner’s report ruled that he died by suicide at age 49. Toxicology found no drugs in his system.

Pickler and Jacobs started dating in 2008 and married in 2011. They also wrote music together.

Kellie Pickler stayed out of public view for six months after his death. When she finally spoke to People in August 2023, she shared something he had taught her about a crisis: “do nothing, just be still.” She said she had chosen to follow that advice.

Being still is hard when the person you lost belonged to more than one family. A wife and a set of parents can both have a real claim on someone, and on his watch, his guitar, his phone. A marriage ties two families together through one person. When that person is gone, nothing holds the arrangement in place except the people left behind, and in this case the legal answer was that his parents ran the estate while his widow held the house.

Nobody in this story did anything unusual. Grief turned possessions into evidence of who he belonged to, and for two years that question went through lawyers.

Her in-laws and Kellie Pickler now say the distribution satisfies them. What each side ended up with, and whether the families still speak, remains private.
