You won’t be able to say “Bah! Humbug!” about Johnny Depp‘s latest look.
The Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 on July 23, taking the stage atCollider’s Directors on Directing panelin full costume as the character of Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film Ebenezer, the latest adaption of CharlesDickens‘ classic novel A Christmas Carol.
Depp, 63, appeared in a long black suit and cape, paired with a black top hat and cane, holding a candle as he roamed around the stage to a cheering crowd. But it was his apparent facial prosthetics, greying sideburns and scowling face that made him fully become the old miser.
The actor—who is appearing in his first movie in three years—embodied the famous curmudgeon while introducing the trailer for Ebenezer, which debuts in theaters Nov. 13 and costars SamClaflin, RupertGrint, Daisy Ridley, TramellTillman and IanMcKellen.
“Since you have traveled all this way, I would like to present every single one of you with—just a minute,” Depp said in character from the stage as seen in a video posted to X. “I would like to present each and every one of you with this candy.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean star then dropped two handfuls of wrapped candies on the stage, before telling the audience in his most monotone delivery to, “Have at it.”
Depp—who shares kids Lily-Rose Depp, 27, and JackDepp, 24, with ex VanessaParadis—also stepped out in character on the streets of San Diego where a facade of the movie’s Scrooge & Marley shop had been set up complete with snow and Christmas carolers.
But of course, Ebenezer Scrooge would never stand for such merriment, with Depp popping out of the building and yelling at the singers to “stop,” as seen in an Instagram Story posted to the film’s account July 23.
He handed out more candy—which he decided to eat himself—before telling the crowd they were “very, very strange people” and headed back inside with a final, “Humbug.”
Ebenezer marks Depp’s first film on the big screen since 2023’s Jeanne du Barry.
