The John Wick story will continue, and Keanu Reeveswill be back—though not in the way you might imagine. The actor has signed a deal to reprise the role in an animated film from Lionsgate.
The film (previously announced as a anime series) will focus on one of the franchise’s most significant events: the “Impossible Task.” Before leaving his life as an assassin to be with his wife, Helen, Wick had to eliminate an entire group of rivals in a single night to break free from the High Table. The event has been referenced throughout the live-action films, but the animated feature will depict it for the first time.

John Wick’s Impossible Task comes to animation
The animated prequel will be directed by Shannon Tindle, whose previous credits include ‘Ultraman: Rising’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings.’Ryan and Kaz Firpo wrote the screenplay, bringing together a creative team with experience in both animation and feature filmmaking.
Production brings back several familiar names from the franchise. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee will produce for Thunder Road, alongside series director Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment. Reeves will also serve as a producer through his involvement with Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures.
“In both animation and the world of ‘John Wick,’ the possibilities are endless. And there is no ‘John Wick’ story fans are clamoring for more than the ‘Impossible Task,’” Lionsgate’s motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said in 2025 when the animated project was announced. “Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.”

‘John Wick 5′ now official, but no word yet on whether Keanu Reeves will return
The animated prequel is part of Lionsgate’s ongoing effortto develop the John Wick universe beyond its original film series. The franchise has generated more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office across five theatrical releases, including the Ana de Armas-led spinoff ‘Ballerina.’ The studio is also developing John Wick 5, which would bring Reeves back for another live-action installment. A separate project centered on Donnie Yen’s Caine, the blind assassin introduced in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ is also in development.
