While we can hope for change in the long run, one thing we have up until this point always known as a certainty in mainstream media and pop culture is that evergreen presence of diet rhetoric and culture. Sure, it’s taken different forms over the years, but it is always there in our commercials and in stores. And, with each wave of fad diets, we see the same rhetoric repackaged with different buzz terms to get us hooked into the next trend.

From the non-fat craze of the 90s, to keto and veganism in the 2010s, and protein and GLP-1s now, there’s always something new to advertise to the insecure. And, it’s gotten to the point now, where the people who grew up in the 1990s are looking back at the diet foods available in grocery stores with a comedic lens. Let’s take a deeper look into how 90s kids are viewing their dieting memories, and how that may be reflected onto current diets in the future.

The Instagram Video That Flooded Us With Memories

Digital creator Becky Strasburger recently took to her Instagram act out a skit that fit in line with all of her 90s and 2000s nostalgia content. But, theres one that specifically reflects on the diet culture of the 1990s that struck a particular chord with fans. The skit, which has nearly 800,000 views on Instagram, takes the perspective of a woman walking through a grocery store in the 90s excited to see all of the diet-friendly snacks on the shelves. Comments were quick to jump on the post and share in the nostalgia and strange nature of snacks like I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, Snackwells, and Slim Fast shakes.

The top comment even went on to emphasize that “This was 100% my diet starter pack back in the day. This and a box of Dexatrim. Young kids stay with their CrossFit and their protein goals have nothing on us.” But for as much as we sympathize with the damage that this kind of diet culture had on people of the 90s, this sentiment of regret and judgment towards these foods has us considering how the current diet trends will be perceived in a couple of years. For as standard as protein-packed food feels right now, I can’t help but wonder what lens we will see it through in 20 years.

    A Vicious Cycle

As it stands, we can’t help feeling like the commenter had a point. While we don’t particularly agree with the fact that the diet trends of the 90s were distinctly more impactful than the current diet trends, these diet foods and claims of results are still just the same things being repackaged to target different sociological trends. Regardless, we are still left with the ultimate question: when this will ever end?

Especially where GLP-1s have become mainstream and so easily accessible, we can’t expect that this diet culture will go away anytime soon. But for the time being, we’re just going to prioritize the advice of our licensed medical professionals rather than the convincing rhetoric we see in commercials and in the grocery store aisles. At the end of the day, we like to keep in mind that the weight loss industry is one of the must lucrative industries in the world and what we see at the grocery store is often a reflection of that.
